Hounds heat up to advance in GLVC Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS – Kourtney Crawford had a match-high 12 kills hitting .346 with four blocks, three assists and two digs to lead No. 19 UIndy over Wisconsin-Parkside, 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-14), in the quarterfinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament on Friday night at the Indy South Sports Academy. The Greyhounds (27-6) advance to Saturday's 7:30 p.m. semifinal against Rockhurst (26-6).

Crawford was joined by GLVC Player of the Year Kristina Kerrigan with 11 kills hitting .391 and 13 digs for her league-leading 19th double-double of the season, while All-GLVC East Division middle blocker Brittany Anglemyer hit .421 with 10 kills and four blocks.

Overall, UIndy hit .299 with All-GLVC First Team setter Meghan Binkerd chipping in 40 assists and 10 digs. The Greyhounds' defense was equally impressive against the Rangers (21-10) by holding them to -.008 attacking with 22 kills and 23 errors. Besides Crawford and Anglemyer, Julia Watkins led the way with a match-high seven blocks, while Hailey Brown added five. In the back, All-GLVC East Division libero Amy Oldenburg had a match-high 16 digs, followed by Kim Trojan with 11. 

The Greyhounds held All-GLVC First Team outside hitter Bridget Nickel of Parkside to .000 attacking with four kills and four errors. Brooke Showalter led the Rangers with six kills hitting .000, while Sarah Mlachnik had 13 digs.

The first set had four ties and four lead changes in the first 12 points, but UIndy broke things open with a 4-0 run, 10-6, including two kills by Kerrigan. The lead continued to grow to eight, 19-11, after a block by Anglemyer and Brown, and the Rangers couldn't mount a challenge. The Greyhounds closed out the set with another 4-0 run capped by Watkins' kill on set point, 25-14. UIndy hit .419 in the set with Anglemyer chipping in seven kills on .778 attacking.

The second set was also tight early with five ties in the first 14 points until UIndy broke it open with a run of five in a row, 12-7, as Watkins and Crawford each had two kills and combined on a block. The Rangers scored three straight to close the deficit, 12-10, but an 8-2 run capped by an ace from Kenzie Bruggeman put the Hounds up eight, 20-12. Again UWP couldn't rally and Crawford gave UIndy the set, 25-16, with a kill.

The Greyhounds scored the first four points of the third set to take early command, but the Rangers were still hanging around, 10-8, when UIndy found another run. A block by Watkins and Brown, followed by a Brown kill started a 7-2 run for UIndy to increase its lead, 17-10, on Bruggeman's back row attack. UIndy rolled from their and Crawford closed out the match, 25-14, to move UIndy forward in the tournament. UIndy's defense is what helped it close the match by holding Wisconsin-Parkside to -.068 hitting with just six kills in the final set. Kerrigan was the closer for UIndy by hitting .500 as she scored five of UIndy's final eight points.

UIndy will rematch with Rockhurst in the semifinals on Saturday after UIndy won the regular season meeting, 3-0, in Kansas City, Mo., on Oct. 7.
