LAKELAND, Fla.- The UIndy baseball team (3-4) ran into a hot West Chester club Monday, as the undefeated Golden Rams handed the Greyhounds losses of 11-2 and 7-1at the Russmatt Central Florida Invite.
GAME 1 (7 inn.)
WCU (7-0) jumped on the Hounds for three runs in the first, two in the second and six in the third, as the Rams chased starter
Phil Wheeler after just an inning and a third of work.
Before things got out of hand, UIndy's best chance came in the top of the second when the Hounds started the frame with five straight hits.
Down just 3-0 at the time, a two-run double from
Bryce Feller pulled Indianapolis to within one run. However, after consecutive bunt singles from
Jake Weinzapfel and
Matt Maringer loaded the bases with no one out, WCU picked off the runner at third, then coaxed a fly ball and a strikeout to end the threat.
UIndy would ultimately out hit the Rams 8-6, but the Hounds stranded seven runners compared to the Rams' three.
Maringer and
Nate Koontz each had two hits for UIndy.
GAME 2 (7 inn.)
WCU starter Dave Stieg faced just four batters over the minimum, as the senior hurler held to Greyhound offense to just two hits in his complete-game win.
UIndy clean-up man
Scott Mourey (pictured) managed a solo homerun in the fourth, while Koontz's seventh-inning single marked the only other base hit for the Hounds.
Freshman
Brett Collins got the starting nod for UIndy, as the Evansville, Ind., native allowed five runs in 4.2 innings during his first collegiate start.
UIndy hopes the bats heat up versus in-region Wayne State tomorrow. First pitch from Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla., is scheduled for 4 p.m.
