Warriors edge Hounds, 3-2

Box score

AUBURNDALE, Fla.-  After going up 2-0 in the top of the sixth, the UIndy baseball team (3-5) couldn't hang on to the lead, as Wayne State tallied single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to slip past the Greyhounds, 3-2, at the Russmatt Central Florida Invite.

With the score knotted at 0-0 after five frames, the Hounds loaded the bases with one out in the top of the sixth to chase WSU starter Greg Spiess.   Senior Scott Mourey followed with his second single of the day, scoring Matt Maringer and Scott Lawley for the game's first runs.

However, Wayne State reliever Ethan Vasiliauskas wriggled out of the jam with consecutive backwards Ks after giving up the RBI knock.

WSU (7-2), coming off an appearance in last year's Midwest Regional final, answered with three straight single-run innings.  The Warriors mustered just two hits in the three frames, scoring in the sixth on a walk, a hit batsman, a wild pitch and a groundout; another hit batsman, a balk and a double in the seventh; and a walk, a stolen base and a single in the eighth.

The Hounds had a couple of late chances but could not deliver, as the designated visitors stranded three runners in the seventh, then squandered a one-out single in the ninth.

UIndy starter JaVaun West tossed five scoreless innings before giving up the RBI groundout with one down in the sixth.  Later, releivers Donovan Drake and Chris Saroff each allowed a run out of the bullpen, with Saroff (0-1) taking the loss.

Vasiliauskas (2-0) ultimately got the win for his 2.2 innings, while Billy Hurley notched the save.

The Hounds wrap up their stay in Florida when they tussle with Mansfield University tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m.  Mansfield's live stats will be available here.
