INDIANAPOLIS-  After earning a convincing 9-3 win in Sunday's first game versus William Jewell, the UIndy baseball team (8-7, 4-2 GLVC) endured its first shutout of the season in a 6-0 loss in game two to settle for a split versus the visiting Cardinals.

GAME 1   (9 inn.)
The Hounds never trailed in game one.  After freshman starter Brett Collins pitched around an error and a walk to stifle the Cardinals (8-12, 1-7) in the top of the first inning, UIndy managed four unearned runs in the bottom of the first, then tacked on two more in the second to earn a 6-0 advantage.

Collins (1-1) went on to throw a total of six strong innings, allowing a lone run in the third.  The Evansville, Ind., native surrendered just three hits, while walking three and striking out two in his first collegiate win.

Meanwhile, Franklin Central grad and UIndy first baseman Jake Hartley had his best game as a Greyhound.  The transfer from Indiana State went 3-for-4 with four runs, two RBI and a walk while smashing his first UIndy homerun with solo shot in the fourth.

Nick Whitty, Nate Koontz, Adam Rusche and Matt Maringer all had two hits and at least one run scored.

GAME 2  (7 inn.)
Contrary to the opener, the UIndy bats went quiet in game two.  WJC starter Cody Downing (1-1) used an effective breaking ball to keep the Hounds off balance, allowing just four hits (all singles) while striking out seven.

Koontz reached base three times with two singles and an HBP, while Maringer had a hit and a walk in his only two plate appearances.

The Greyhounds remain at home for a pair of mid-week dates this week.  UIndy hosts Kentucky State for a doubleheader Tuesday at 1 p.m., then welcome Urbana for a single game Thursday at 3 p.m.  Both teams are considered in-region opponents.
