Box Score 2 HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky.- The #4 UIndy softball team ran its NCAA Division II-leading win streak to 22 with a pair of victories over Northern Kentucky in GLVC play Sunday. The Greyhounds (26-1; 14-0 GLVC) won game one 2-1 in eight innings before taking game two 9-2.
#4 UIndy 2, Northern Kentucky 1 (8 inn.)
Game one of the twinbill featured a marquee matchup of arguably the GLVC's two best pitchers in
Jennifer DeMotte and Emily Schwaeble. The two teams combined for just three runs on 11 hits in the contest.
Casey Williamson put the visiting Greyhounds up 1-0 early, with a home run over the left field fence in just the second at bat of the ball game.
NKU answered in the fourth inning with a single run on three hits. The Norse left three on base in the frame, with DeMotte getting out of the bases-loaded jam by coaxing a pop-up to the first baseman by Schwaeble.
The teams went to extra frames, with the Greyhounds pushing across the eventual game-winner in the top of the eighth. Williamson was hit by a pitch, stole second and came home on a single to right field by DeMotte to put the Greyhounds up 2-1.
DeMotte took the win in the circle, striking out six in her eight-inning effort. Williamson scored both UIndy runs, and had an RBI in a 1-for-2 showing at the plate.
#4 UIndy 9, Northern Kentucky 2
UIndy plated one run in the top of the first on a back-to-back doubles by
Cori Eckerle and Williamson to take the early 1-0 advantage in game two. The Norse tied the contest, however, with one run on two hits in the bottom of the inning.
Host NKU plated another run in the second to take the lead, chasing off UIndy starter
Audrey Ernst after an inning and two-thirds of work.
The Greyhounds put up four runs in the third inning, on five doubles. Eckerle started the two-bagger parade with a one-out shot to left center, with DeMotte taking her place on second with a hit to left field two batters later.
Alexa Alfaro's double brought home DeMotte, with yet another 2B by
Samantha Krcelich bringing home Alfaro an at bat later.
Briana Clark provided the final UIndy RBI of the frame, with her double to right scoring Krcelich.
UIndy put up another three runs in the fifth inning, with two coming via a home run by Krcelich. The homer brought in Alfaro, who doubled to open the inning. Clark would also score, unearned on an NKU right fielder error, to push the score to 8-2 in favor of the Greyhounds.
A double from
Sydney Russell plated
Dakota Malayer, who singled a batter earlier in the UIndy seventh, to run the final score to 9-2 Greyhounds.
DeMotte (18-1) earned her second victory of the day in the UIndy win. The reigning GLVC and NFCA DII Pitcher of the Week struck out six in five and one-thirds innings of shutout relief to take the win. Both Alfaro and Krcelich each had three hits in game two, with Krcelich putting up three RBIs.
The Greyhounds step out of GLVC play for a doubleheader at Ohio Dominican Thursday afternoon, before continuing league play at Southern Indiana and Kentucky Wesleyan this Saturday and Sunday.
