EVANSVILLE, Ind.- The #2 Greyhounds took a doubleheader sweep of Southern Indiana in GLVC play Saturday, improving their overall record to 30-1 and their league record to 16-0.
#2 UIndy 3, Southern Indiana 2
The Greyhounds opened the day's scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. UIndy put up both runs on a two-out triple down the rightfield line by
Briana Clark, plating
Jennifer DeMotte and
Alexa Alfaro. DeMotte doubled to leftcenter to open the frame, while Alfaro reached base via a walk.
UIndy pushed across another run in the top of the third, with
Casey Williamson and DeMotte hitting back-to-back doubles to provide the score.
The Screaming Eagles plated their two runs in the bottom of the sixth, on three hits, to run the score to 3-2 Greyhounds.
DeMotte had three of UIndy's seven hits in the contest, and she also earned the victory in the circle, improving to 20-1. The UIndy junior struck out eight and walked no one in the win.
#2 UIndy 12, Southern Indiana 2 (5 innings)
UIndy jumped ahead early in game two, plating three runs on four hits in the first inning.
Kelsey Rummel opened the ballgame with a double to left field, and came home two batters later on a Williamson single through the right side.
After stealing second, Williamson came around to score on a single to center by Alfaro, while a single by Clark scored DeMotte, who walked.
The Greyhounds put up another four runs in the second inning, on three hits and a pair of USI errors. Rummel reached on a fielder's choice, and scored on a dropped flyball in centerfield off the bat of Williamson.
A single to center by Alfaro brought in a pair of runs, with both Williamson and
Cori Eckerle coming home on the play. Alfaro would also score in the inning, on a single to centerfield by
Samantha Krcelich.
Southern Indiana brought in a pair of runs on one hit and a pair of walks in the bottom of the third to put the score at 7-2 UIndy.
The Greyhounds pushed across a single run in the top of the fourth, with Alfaro scoring on a double to left center by Krcelich.
Another big inning in the fifth put the Greyhounds up 12-2. Eckerle led off the frame with a double to right center, and scored on a DeMotte single to right center two batters later. A sacrifice fly to center by Alfaro plated Williamson, who walked to reach base.
The final pair of Greyhound runs came in via a longball by Krcelich, with DeMotte also scoring on the homer.
Audrey Ernst (10-0) picked up the victory in game two, surrendering just two hits to the Screaming Eagles in the win. Eckerle and Krcelich each had three hits in the contest for the Greyhounds.
UIndy continues GLVC play Sunday, in a doubleheader at Kentucky Wesleyan. First pitch is slated for noon CST.
NOTES: UIndy has now won 26 straight contests, most in program history...the Greyhounds have now secured their fifth-straight 30-win season, and sixth in program history...the most wins ever by a UIndy softball team came in 2008, as the team posted a 39-28 record...the most GLVC wins ever by a UIndy team was the 22-6 record posted in 2010.
