Baseball starts Florida trip with loss at Rollins

WINTER PARK, Fla.-  The UIndy baseball team (2-1) kicked off its seven-game stint in the Sunshine State with a 5-2 loss at Rollins College Friday afternoon.  With just two games under their belts heading into the day, the Greyhounds faced a Tars' club that already played 17 games this season.

In his first official start of 2012, Donovan Drake (pictured) had a normally-solid line of six innings pitched, two earned runs, nine strikeouts and zero walks.  However, the senior hurler surrendered a pair of unearned runs in the sixth inning after a throwing error helped hang a pair of tallies on the board for the home Tars (13-5)

Meanwhile, the Greyhound offense was held to just two runs in nine innings, with the visitors picking up solo runs in the fourth and eighth innings.  Tyler O'Daniel was the only Hound with more than one hit, as the junior third baseman went 2-for-3 at the plate.  He led off the fourth with a walk and eventually scored on a single from Mitch Ransberg, then smashed an RBI double in the eighth to score Jake Hartley from first base.

Righty Taylor Smith earned the win for Rollins, upping his mark to 3-0.  He allowed just one run and four hits in seven innings of work.

UIndy continues play in the Russmatt Central Florida Invite when it heads to Winter Haven, Fla., tomorrow to face in-region Ashland.  First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. Eastern.
