Four Greyhounds named All-Americans

MANKATO, Minn.- Four UIndy student-athletes were named All-Americans at Day one of the 2012 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Day one of the Championships got off on the right foot for the Greyhounds, with both Matt Royer and Ryan Smith earning All-American honors in the men's weight throw.

Royer took second place in the nation in the event with a throw of 21.36, while Smith took fifth with a toss of 20.57. Heading into his last throw of the day, Smith was actually in ninth overall, but the UIndy junior threw his highest mark in his final throw to jump to fifth place.

Two more UIndy All-Americans were crowned in the long jump Friday evening, with Jerel Flournoy taking fourth and Joshua Bass taking seventh in the event.

Flournoy came in fourth in the field with a leap of 7.49m, while Bass earned his seventh-place finish with a mark of 7.36m.

In the preliminaries of the 400-meter dash, Robert Gardner qualified for the finals of the race with a time of 48.33, good for third best of the qualifying times. Gardner also qualified for the final 200-meter race, with a time of 21.84.

In action tomorrow, both Royer and Smith will compete in the men's shot put, while on the track side of the events Gardner will run in the finals of both the 200- and 400-meter dashes. The men's 4x400 meter relay squad of Gardner, Flournoy, Kyle Schwartz and Jermel Kindred will also compete, closing out the meet's action.
