Softball up to 18-0 in GLVC play with sweep of KWC

OWENSBORO, Ky.- #2 UIndy softball ran its win streak to 28 games with a doubleheader sweep at GLVC-foe Kentucky Wesleyan Sunday.

The Greyhounds plated two runs on three hits in the top of the third inning to stake themselves to an early 2-0 lead.

Taylor Russell scored on a single by Kelsey Rummel, after reaching on a bunt single to open the inning. Sydney Russell scored the second run of the inning, coming home on a Jennifer DeMotte single after walking to reach base.

UIndy put up single runs in both the fifth and seventh innings to run the score to 4-0. Rummel scored the third Greyhound tally on an RBI single by Casey Williamson, while Sydney Russell came in to score the fourth UIndy run on a sacrifice bunt by Cori Eckerle.

DeMotte (21-1) earned the win, striking out 10 in her seven shutout innings of work. The Greyhound junior surrendered just two hits to the Panthers, and walked no one in the complete-game effort.

UIndy put up two runs in the second, third and sixth innings and another three in the seventh to take a 9-2 win over KWC in the nightcap.

The Greyhounds scored two runs on two hits and one Panther error in the second. A Taylor Russell double brought home Briana Clark, and Russell came home herself a batter later on a Sydney Russell bunt single.

Both third-inning scores came in on a single by Alexa Alfaro, with Williamson and Eckerle scoring on the play.

Host Kentucky Wesleyan tallied both of its runs in the bottom of the third, on three hits and one Greyhound error.

UIndy added two more runs in the sixth, on a pair of hits and one KWC error. Both runs came home on a Williamson single, with Sydney Russell and Samantha Krcelich scoring on the hit.

The final three Greyhound runs came on four hits in the seventh inning. Alfaro, who singled and stole second to open the inning, came home on a Taylor Russell single. Rummel singled home both Taylor Russell and Krcelich to close out the scoring.

Alfaro, Taylor Russell and Sydney Russell each had two hits for UIndy in the win, while Audrey Ernst (11-0) earned the victory. Ernst tossed four innings, striking out two, before giving way to DeMotte, who earned her second save of the year in three innings of relief work.

The Greyhounds host Saint Joseph's in a mid-week GLVC doubleheader Tuesday at Baumgartner Field. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
