ROMEOVILLE, Ill.- The #2 UIndy softball team split a GLVC doubleheader at Lewis Sunday, with
Jennifer DeMotte tossing a perfect game in the first contest of the day in the Greyhound's win. The Flyers then took the second game of the day with a 4-3 win over UIndy (42-3; 26-2 GLVC).
#2 UIndy 9, Lewis 0 (5 innings)
DeMotte's second perfect game of the 2012 season against the Lewis Flyers led UIndy to a 9-0, five-inning win in game one of the day. The Greyhound junior tossed her 13
th shutout of the season, striking out two en route to her 28
th victory against two losses on the year.
UIndy put up three runs in the top of the third inning, on four hits. A single up the middle with one out by
Kelsey Rummel sparked the offense, with
Taylor Russell following with a bunt single. After a
Casey Williamson walk, DeMotte singled to leftcenter to plate Rummel.
The other two Greyhound runs came in two batters later on a double to left center by
Samantha Krcelich, scoring both Williamson and Russell.
The Greyhounds put up the rest of their nine-run total in the top of the fifth inning.
Cori Eckerle got things started with one out, reaching on a bunt single. Krcelich followed with a single to centerfield, with
Briana Clark loading the bases full of Greyhounds with a single to right.
An RBI groundout from
Alexa Alfaro scored Eckerle, while
Sydney Russell singled to left to score Krcelich a batter later. Rummel followed with a single to second, scoring Clark, with
Sydney Russell coming home on a wild pitch just a bit later.
A Williamson single brought home Rummel, with
Taylor Russell coming home on a fielding error on a double-steal to run the UIndy total to 9-0.
Krcelich was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in the win, with two RBIs to lead the Greyhounds.
Lewis 4, #2 UIndy 3
The Greyhounds pushed across one run in the top of the seventh, but left the bases loaded in the final frame in taking a 4-3 loss to the host Flyers in the nightcap.
Both teams put up a single run in their respective halves of the first inning, with Rummel coming home on an RBI groundout by DeMotte in the UIndy first.
The Greyhounds took a slim 2-1 lead with another single run in the third. Rummel again scored, coming in on a bases-loaded walk to Eckerle after singling up the middle to reach base.
The Flyers (23-22; 15-15 GLVC) took the lead with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the third, and added another run on one hit in the bottom of the sixth.
Sydney Russell scored after walking to open the UIndy seventh, on a DeMotte single to centerfield, to run the final score to 4-3 in favor of Lewis.
DeMotte (28-3) took the loss in the circle, striking out two in three innings of work before giving way to
Audrey Ernst, who struck out one and surrendered two hits in her three innings of work. Williamson went 3-for-3 at the plate in game two for the Greyhounds.
Next up for UIndy is a trip up I-65 Wednesday for a GLVC doubleheader at Saint Joseph's.
