RENSSELAER, Ind.- The nationally-ranked Greyhounds were swept for the first time this season, dropping a pair of GLVC contests at Saint Joseph's Wednesday.
Saint Joseph's 2, #2 UIndy 1
The Greyhounds (42-5; 26-4 GLVC) put up the first run of the game on a pair of hits in the top of the third inning.
Briana Clark opened the inning with a single, and moved to second on a groundout by
Sydney Russell. She was brought home on a single by
Kelsey Rummel to put UIndy up 1-0.
The lead would be short-lived, however, as the Pumas (34-13; 22-8 GLVC) tied the game in the bottom of the inning with one run on two hits. Saint Joseph's plated the eventual game-winner in the bottom of the fourth, on one hit and a pair of Greyhound errors.
Jennifer DeMotte took the loss in game one. DeMotte gave up both SJC runs, one earned, over her six innings of work. She struck out a pair of Pumas in the contest.
Saint Joseph's 4, #2 UIndy 3
UIndy plated all three of its runs in the top of the first inning, but the host Pumas plated four runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the game two win.
DeMotte reached via an error in the outfield with one out, and was followed onbase by
Casey Williamson, who was intentionally walked.
Cori Eckerle was hit by a pitch a batter later to load the bases.
Samantha Krcelich singled to bring home DeMotte and keep the bases full of Greyhounds.
Taylor Russell reached on a fielder's choice, plating Williamson, with the final UIndy run coming on a bases-loaded walk issued to
Audrey Ernst.
A bases-loaded single scored a pair of runs for the Pumas in the bottom of the seventh, with a double to centerfield allowing the final two SJC runs to come home.
Ernst (14-1) took the loss, her first of the season. The UIndy junior struck out two. Krcelich's two hits led the UIndy offense.
The Greyhounds return home for a pair of weekend GLVC doubleheaders at Baumgartner Field Saturday and Sunday. UIndy hosts Northern Kentucky at noon Saturday, with the day celebrating the rededication of Baumgartner Field. Sunday's twinbill is against Bellarmine at noon, with the Greyhounds raising awareness of Muscular Dystrophy. The weekend will also be celebrating Ernst's final year as a Greyhound..
