SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The No. 20 Drury men's tennis team was able to defend its home court by defeating UIndy, 6-0, on Friday in the quarterfinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships.
The Greyhounds (11-9) fell behind early against the Panthers (15-3) in the second meeting this season between the two programs. Roman Gonda and Lukas Kriem defeated
Caleb Fellers and
Matt Smith at No. 1 doubles, 8-2, while the No. 23 doubles team in the country of Andy Blair and Sergio Manzanas beat
Preston Swain and
Pete Wilson 8-3 at No. 2. Drury completed the sweep with Jandui Reyes and J. Nadal Volckaert defeating
Trevor Cox and
Alex Poe, 8-3.
Singles had three matches finishes in short succession accounting for the final score. Nationally-ranked No. 34 Blair defeated Cox 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 and No. 47 Gonda won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 over Fellers. The No. 4 match was the other finisher with Manzanas downing Poe 6-1, 6-1.
Despite the loss in the tournament, UIndy finished with its best record since the 2008-09 season (13-12) in John Venter's fifth season as head coach.
