SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The No. 50 University of Indianapolis women's tennis team saw its season come to a close on Friday morning at the hands of Rockhurst, 5-0, in the quarterfinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tennis Championships.
The Hawks (11-2) dominated in doubles to take a commanding lead into singles, 3-0, against the Greyhounds (12-8). Erin Bales and Maureen Rielley, the 10th-ranked doubles team in the Midwest, blanked UIndy's senior all-conference tandem of
Maggie Ashby and
Alena Perez-Majul, 8-0, at No. 1 and Karsyn Betts and Alex Schelble won at No. 2, 8-4, against a new team of freshmen
Kelsey Matthews and
Brooke Boyts. The third doubles match was an 8-5 win by Mary and Rachel Lanaghen against
Taylor Eckert and
Meghan Teunis.
Rockhurst needed to win only two of the six singles matches to eliminate UIndy and did just that with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Rielley, the No. 8 singles player in the region, knocked off Perez-Majul, the No. 19 player in the region, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1.
Ashby was engaged in a battle at No. 2 against Betts before succumbing 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. The remaining matches at No. 3 and No. 4 were called off after the team decision was decided, while matches at No. 5 and No. 6 weren't started.
