Softball closes out GLVC regular season with split

INDIANAPOLIS- Second-ranked UIndy softball split its final GLVC regular-season doubleheader of the 2012 season Sunday, besting Bellarmine 4-0 in game one before falling to the Knights 3-1 in the nightcap.

The Greyhounds (44-7; 28-6 GLVC) plated all four of their runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, on three hits. Casey Williamson, who tallied her 72nd hit, a new UIndy single-season record in the Greyhound first inning, opened the frame with a walk and a steal of second, and came home on a two-out single up the middle by Alexa Alfaro. The run scored by Williamson also made her the new single-season runs scored leader, with 52.

Briana Clark followed Alfaro on base with a single to left, and both came home on a homerun to centerfield by Cori Eckerle, pushing the score to 4-0 UIndy.

Jennifer DeMotte (29-5) took the win on the mound, tossing the seven-inning shutout. DeMotte surrendered three hits and struck out eight in her 14th shutout of the season. Clark's two hits at the plate, along with Eckerle's three RBIs, led the Greyhound offense.

Bellarmine 3, #2 UIndy 1
The Knights (31-25; 21-15 GLVC) broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the top of the fifth inning, with a Laurne Summe home run over the centerfield fence bringing in all three tallies.

UIndy got on the board in the bottom of the sixth, with Williamson leading off the frame with a solo homerun to right field, good for her seventh homer of the year.

Audrey Ernst (15-2) was assessed the loss, striking out four and scattering five hits through five and one-third innings of work. Sydney Russell's two hits led the Greyhounds at the plate.

UIndy closes out the regular season at Cedarville Tuesday. First pitch between the Greyhounds and the Yellow Jackets is slated for 3 p.m. GLVC Softball Championship play begins next weekend from East Peoria, Ill., with UIndy clinched as the tournament's #1 seed.

NOTES: Both teams participated in raising awareness for the Muscular Dystrophy Association on the day...the Greyhounds honored Audrey Ernst for her three years of dedication to UIndy softball...Williamson broke the previous single-season hits record of 71, set in the 2008 season by former Greyhound Jessica Breeden...Williamson also scored in game two, bringing her new UIndy season-best run total to 53 thus far this season. The previous record of 51 was set by Jamie Keltz in 2010.
