HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky.- The No. 24 UIndy baseball team (30-11, 20-6 GLVC) climbed to the top of the GLVC East standings Tuesday by taking two at division-rival and 29th-ranked Northern Kentucky, 6-3 and 8-7. The Greyhounds are now 5-for-5 in season series versus East Division teams this year.
GAME 1 (7 inn.)
UIndy broke a 1-1 tie with a three-run fourth inning, with both
Scott Lawley and
Mike Page picking up RBI singles in the frame.
After the Norse (28-14, 20-7) crept to within one at 4-3, the Hounds tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth on a Page sac fly and a
Matt Maringer single.
Junior starter
JaVaun West got the 'W' by holding the Norse to three runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings. West, who now sports a tidy 5-0 record on the year, also fanned a season-high nine batters while walking only one.
Relievers
Tyler Norton and
Chris Saroff came on to get the final five outs, with Saroff notching his sixth save of the season with a perfect seventh.
GAME 2 (9 inn.)
The Greyhounds got out of the gate quickly with three runs in the first and two in the second. UIndy combined for seven hits in the first two frames, including first-inning RBI doubles from
Nate Koontz and
Nick Whitty.
Nevertheless, the Norse clawed their way back to pull within one run at 6-5.
After the Hounds hung two more on the board in the top of the eighth, Saroff got the call again. Though he took the ball with a three-run lead, the senior closer struggled initially by giving up three hits and two runs without recording an out. Saroff settled down to retire to next six hitters, however, and notch the two-inning save.
With starter
Alex Wood lasting just four innings, freshman
Brett Collins (3-1) got his first collegiate relief win with 2 2/3 innings of one-hit ball.
UIndy returns home Wednesday for its final non-conference game when the Hounds host cross-town Butler for a single game. First pitch from Greyhound Park is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Note: Tuesday's doubleheader was played to make up for a rainout back on Apr. 14.
