UIndy softball closes out regular season at Cedarville

CEDARVILLE, Ohio- The Greyhound softball team closed out the 2012 regular season with an 8-0, six-inning non-league win at Cedarville Tuesday afternoon.

#2 UIndy (45-7; 28-6 GLVC) got on the board with a single run in the top of the third inning, with Alexa Alfaro opening the inning taking her base via a hit by a pitch. After a steal of second, Alfaro came home on a triple to centerfield by Kelsey Rummel.

The Greyhounds put up three more runs in the top of the fourth, with Jennifer DeMotte leading off the inning with a triple to right center. She came home a batter later, with Samantha Krcelich belting her team-leading eighth homerun over the leftfield line.

Briana Clark followed with a triple to right, and scored a few batters later on a sacrifice bunt by Krysta Bradford to bring the score to 4-0 UIndy.

DeMotte would score her second run of the game in the top of fifth, after reaching on a single up the middle. Clark brought her home with her own single up the middle.

The Greyhounds added three more runs in the top of the sixth to close out the win, with Cori Eckerle opening the frame with a single to right field. Jessica Vleck came in to pinch run for Eckerle, with her advancing to third on a double to leftfield by Rummel.

Rummel advanced to third, and Vleck came into score on a throwing error by the Yellow Jacket catcher. Sydney Russell followed on base with a walk, with Casey Williamson also walking.

DeMotte brought in both Russell and Williamson on a double to right center to close out the scoring and give UIndy the 8-0 win.

Both Rummel and Clark had two hits each for the Greyhounds in the win, with DeMotte (30-5) picking up her 30th win in the circle. The UIndy junior scattered four hits and struck out eight while walking just one to earn the victory.

The Greyhounds head into the 2012 GLVC Softball Championships this weekend as the tournament's #1 seed. UIndy faces off with eight-seeded Quincy in the tournament's first game, at 10:00 a.m. Friday.
