INDIANAPOLIS-
Matt Maringer's walk-off single in the 11th inning lifted the UIndy baseball team (31-11) to a 13-12 win versus visiting Butler Wednesday. The Greyhounds, ranked 24th in the NCAA Division II poll, erased Butler leads of 7-0, 8-3 and 12-10 before Maringer's heroics pushed them over the top in the rain-soaked affair.
Through just two-and-a-half innings, Butler managed seven unanswered runs to put the Hounds in an early hole, but UIndy came charging back with three runs in the third, four in the fourth and three more in the fifth. Senior DH
Scott Mourey had two RBI singles in that span, while senior catcher
Brandon Stevens smacked a solo homerun.
The Bulldogs (19-22) garnered four runs in the seventh to take a 12-10 lead and regain the momentum. The rally was punctuated by a three-run bomb by freshman Ryan Wojciechowski.
With a light but steady rain falling by this point, UIndy once again fought back to tie it at 12-12 in the eighth.
Scott Lawley and
Tyler O'Daniel each had base hits before a
Jake Hartley double scored them both.
The score remained knotted at 12 until the bottom of the 11th. The deciding frame began with junior
Nick Whitty advancing all the way to second base when Butler third baseman Lucas Calderon sailed his throw to first.
Adam Rusche followed with a sac bunt to get Whitty to third, and two batters later with the Bulldog infield in, Maringer ended it with a grounder up the middle.
Junior reliever
Clint Seefeldt (2-2) finished the game for the Hounds to get the win. The Lawrence North grad was charged with one earned run in his five innings of work.
UIndy returns to conference play with a four-game set versus Southern Indiana at Greyhound Park this weekend. The division rivals play a single game Friday starting at 2 p.m.
