INDIANAPOLIS- The No. 24 UIndy baseball team (33-11, 22-6 GLVC) held Southern Indiana to a just one run in 16 innings during Friday's doubleheader sweep. The Hounds defeated the visiting Screaming Eagles by scores 8-0 and 2-1, with the opener featuring a complete-game shutout from senior
Donovan Drake – his fifth of the season.
GAME 1 (9 inn.)
Drake added another feather to his cap in what has thus far been a stellar senior season. The Greyhound ace struck out an amazing 18 batters during the nine-inning shutout. The strikeout total was easily the highest in the GLVC this season, and the most by a Greyhound since 1999, the earliest year in which single-game pitching records are available.
In addition, the only hits the Eagles could muster were a bloop single in the second inning and a seeing-eye grounder in the seventh. Drake's record improves to 7-1 on the season, while his ERA drops to a miniscule 1.02.
Third baseman
Tyler O'Daniel backed Drake with three RBI, including a two-run double in the fifth. Both catcher
Nick Whitty and centerfielder
Matt Maringer scored two runs, while shortstop
Mike Page drove in a pair.
GAME 2 (7 inn.)
Game-two starter
Hugo Lalonde, who surrendered seven hits and three walks, battled his way out of a couple jams to hold USI to just one run in five innings. He struck out the side in the first despite loading the bases, and later K'd two Eagles with runners on first and third in the fourth; USI came up empty in both situations.
After the Eagles finally broke through with one run in the fifth,
Tyler Norton relieved Lalonde (5-4) to start the sixth. The lefty got two outs before yielding to closer
Chris Saroff, who went on to record a four-out save to make the slim one-run lead stick. Saroff now has eight saves on the season, good for fifth in the conference.
Offensively, the Hounds got an RBI single from senior
Scott Mourey in the third, while fourth-innings doubles from O'Daniel and
Adam Rusche capped the UIndy scoring.
The GLVC East-leading Greyhounds wrap up the season series with USI with a twin bill tomorrow at noon. If the weather does not cooperate, the games could be pushed to a later time Saturday or moved outright to Sunday. Stay tuned the athletics.uindy.edu for any potential schedule changes.
