UIndy advances on in GLVC Softball Championship play with 8-0 win over Northern Kentucky

Box Score

EAST PEORIA, Ill.- The top-seeded UIndy softball team closed out day one of the 2012 GLVC Softball Championships with an 8-0 win in five innings over #5 seed Northern Kentucky in quarterfinal action.

UIndy put up four runs in the bottom of the first inning, with Kelsey Rummel opening the frame with a double to right center. A sacrifice bunt from Sydney Russell moved Rummel to third, and a double from Casey Williamson brought the Greyhound thirdbaseman home.

After Williamson moved to third on a passed ball, Jennifer DeMotte was hit by a pitch. Both came home on a double down the leftfield line by Briana Clark.

The final run came home a couple of batters later, with Clark scoring on a single up the middle by Cori Eckerle.

Williamson made the score 5-0 UIndy with her eighth homerun of the season, sending the ball out down the rightfield line to lead off the UIndy fifth.

A double from Alfaro to right center scored both Samantha Krcelich and pinch-runner Jessica Vleck to run the score to 7-0 in favor of the Greyhounds.

Rummel ended the ballgame with a single down the rightfield line, with Alfaro scoring the final UIndy run.

DeMotte (32-5) struck out five in her 16th shutout victory of the season. She scattered four hits in the ballgame en route to the win. Rummel paced the offense with three hits in four atbats, including the walk-off single in the bottom of the fifth.

With the win, the top-seeded Greyhounds advance to the semifinal of the 2012 GLVC Softball Championships, where they will face off with #6 seed Lewis in a 1:00 game Saturday afternoon. On the regular season, UIndy took three of four from the Flyers, with Greyhound ace Jennifer DeMotte tossing a pair of perfect games against Lewis. The Flyers defeated #3 seed Drury in their first game of the day, 4-3, and dropped another higher seed in #2 Illinois Springfield, 5-3, to earn the right to play UIndy.

NOTES: Casey Williamson's 131 total bases to date are now the most since Megan Russell's 129 in 2009, and the most by a Greyhound in the era for which such statistics are available...heading into tomorrow's matchup with Lewis, the Greyhounds are 3-14 against the Flyers in GLVC Touranment games in program history.
