Top-seeded Greyhounds open GLVC play with 16-1 win

Box Score

EAST PEORIA, Ill.- The #4 Greyhound softball team showed the GLVC why it earned the top seed in the 2012 GLVC Softball Championships with a dominating 16-1 win over eight-seeded Quincy in five innings to open tournament play Friday morning.

The Greyhounds (46-7) came out swinging, putting up seven runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning. The first run crossed in the form of Sydney Russell, who reached via a walk and came home on Samantha Krcelich being hit by a pitch.

An Alexa Alfaro double a couple batters later plated three, with Krcelich, Jennifer DeMotte, who also reached on a walk, and Casey Williamson who reached on an infield single, all coming home.

Taylor Russell sent a single up the middle a couple of batters later to score Alfaro, with a Kelsey Rummel single to centerfield scoring Cori Eckerle a batter later. Russell would also come home as the seventh run, via a passed ball.

UIndy added one more in the second, with Krcelich scoring on a ball mishandled by the Quincy shortstop off the bat of Alfaro.

Quincy tallied its lone run in the third inning, an unearned score off of a pair of UIndy errors.

A single through the left side from Jennifer DeMotte scored both Sydney Russell and Rummel in the bottom of the third to run the score to 10-1 in the Greyhounds' favor.

UIndy continued the onslaught in the fourth inning, adding six more runs on five hits. Eckerle singled down the leftfield line to bring in Briana Clark, who got on by an error by the Lady Hawk thirdbaseman.

The second and third scores of the fourth came in via Taylor Russell's second homerun of the season, with Eckerle's pinchrunner Jessica Vleck also coming home on the shot to left center.

Williamson's UIndy single-season record-breaking 19th double of the year scored Rummel, who reached on an error by Quincy's firstbaseman, pushing the score to 14-1.

The final pair of Greyhounds crossed the plate on a DeMotte homerun that bounced off the  top of the rightcenter fence. Williamson also scored on the bomb, DeMotte's second of the season.

DeMotte (31-5) earned the victory in the circle, striking out eight in three innings of work. Audrey Ernst came on in relief and pitched two innings of no-hit relief. DeMotte also paced the offense with four RBIs in a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.

The win advances UIndy to face #5-seed Northern Kentucky (34-17) at 4 p.m. Friday. The Norse bested #4-seed Saint Joseph's 12-2 in five innings in their opening contest of the day.
