EAST PEORIA, Ill.- The UIndy softball team played itself into the GLVC Softball Championship game for the first time since 1990, and bested Lewis for the first time in tournament play since 2008 with a 5-2 win over the Flyers Saturday afternoon at EastSide Centre.
A one-out double to center by
Sydney Russell started things off in the top of the first for UIndy. She came home on a single to the gap in right center by
Casey Williamson to give the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead just three batters into the contest.
Briana Clark opened the second inning with a walk, and moved to third on a double through the left side by
Alexa Alfaro. A single up the middle brought both Clark and Alfaro home to push the score to 3-0 UIndy. Russell came home a couple batters later on a single up the middle off the bat of her sister, Sydney.
The Flyers got on the board with a Mary Giancarlo homerun out to centerfield off the first pitch of the Lewis second. Lewis added another tally in the bottom of the third, with the speedy Jayme Hefler scoring on a single deflected off of
Jennifer DeMotte in the pitcher's circle.
DeMotte added an insurance run to her own cause in the top of the seventh, sending a ball out over the leftfield fence to run the total to 5-2.
Alfaro led the offense at the plate, posting a 3-for-4 performance.
Taylor Russell had two RBI, with DeMotte (33-5) earning the victory. The junior struck out two and scattered seven hits en route to her third win of the GLVC Tournament.
