INDIANAPOLIS- The No. 24 UIndy baseball team (34-12, 23-7 GLVC) settled for a doubleheader split with Southern Indiana Sunday, taking game one 6-3 before dropping the capper 7-4. On the final home date of the season, the Greyhounds honored their 12 seniors between games.
GAME 1 (7 inn.)
With yesterday's rain out allowing normal rest for the Greyhound's game-one starter, junior
JaVaun West notched his first complete game of the season, striking out eight batters and walking zero. West held the Screaming Eagles (24-22, 14-18) to just three runs on five hits to push his season mark to a spotless 6-0.
UIndy, ranked second in the region this week, put up four runs in the pivotal third inning. Three singles, a walk and a hit batsman fueled the scoring, as seniors
Matt Maringer and
Nate Koontz recorded RBIs.
Senior pitcher Silas Dill took the loss for USI. Counting his 2 1/3 innings in relief work Friday, Dill allowed a total seven runs in five-plus innings versus the Hounds this weekend.
GAME 2 (9 inn.)
The Hounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in game two with an RBI single from
Tyler O'Daniel in the first.
The Greyhound bats went quiet after that, however, as USI starter Jim Mulvaney kept UIndy off the board for the next five frames.
Meanwhile, the Eagles offense produced three runs (two earned) in the second, one in the third and one in the fourth -- all of which were charged to UIndy starter
Alex Wood.
The Greyhounds pushed across single runs in each of the final three innings, but it proved too little, too late.
Wood (4-1) garnered his first loss of the year, as he surrendered seven hits and two walks in 3 1/3 innings.
Four Greyhounds had two hits apiece, with first baseman
Jake Hartley adding a double, a run and a walk.
The game-two loss snapped UIndy's seven-game winning streak. Nevertheless, the Hounds' two wins Friday meant they won the season series with USI. In fact, the Greyhounds have yet to lose a series with a divisional opponent all year, going 19-5 versus the GLVC East to date.
Just one series remains in the 2012 regular season, as UIndy heads to Kentucky Wesleyan for a four-game set with the Panthers. First pitch Saturday from Owensboro, Ky., is scheduled for 1 p.m. Eastern.
