UIndy softball wins program-first GLVC Championship

Box Score

EAST PEORIA, Ill.- The Greyhound softball team won its program-first GLVC championship Sunday, with top-seeded UIndy taking an 8-0, five-inning win over #2 seed Illinois Springfield at the EastSide Centre.

Prior to this year's win, UIndy had previously been in the GLVC championship game just once before. The Greyhounds fell 7-5 to Ashland in the 1990 title game.

Top-seeded UIndy (49-7) put three runs up in the top of the second, behind the power of the longball. Samantha Krcelich sent the first ball out, a solo shot to leftfield, with one out in the UIndy second. The Krcelich homer was her team-leading ninth of 2012.

Cori Eckerle put two more runs on the board four batters later, sending another ball out over the leftfield fence. Eckerle's blast, good for her sixth of the year, also scored Alexa Alfaro, who reached via a single through the right side.

The Greyhounds added a couple more in the top of the third, with Kelsey Rummel opening the inning with a single to left. She stole second, and came home on a double to left center by GLVC Player of the Year Casey Williamson.

Williamson would also score, a batter later, on a single down the rightfield line off the bat of Jennifer DeMotte.

Krcelich's second homer of the day, and 10th of the year, a three-run shot that plated both DeMotte and Sydney Russell, pushed the score to 8-0 UIndy in the top of the fifth.

GLVC Pitcher of the Year DeMotte (34-5) earned the win in the circle, tossing five innings of one-hit softball. The shutout is the 17th of the year for the junior, who struck out nine in the victory. Krcelich had four RBI, two runs scored and went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Greyhound offense in the win.

The GLVC Champion Greyhounds now await their NCAA Regional opponent. The 2012 NCAA Division II Softball Selection Show is slated for 10:00 a.m. EST Monday morning, and can be viewed here.
