RENSSELAER, Ind.- The UIndy baseball team (16-8, 9-3 GLVC) earned a mid-week sweep at division-rival Saint Joseph's Tuesday, downing the host Pumas by scores of 7-1 and 8-2. The Greyhounds' barrage of base hits totaled two dozen on the day, helping up the team's GLVC win streak to five.
Not to be overshadowed, the Greyhound pitching staff tossed a total of 16 innings while allowing just two earned runs on nine hits.
GAME 1 (9 inn.)
The Hounds scored seven unanswered runs to start the game, including two runs each in the second, third and fifth innings.
Junior
Tyler O'Daniel started the Hounds' scoring with a two-run bomb in the second – his third of the season. O'Daniel earned another RBI in the very next inning on a sac fly. Later, he also plated
Scott Mourey with a seventh-inning single.
Mourey, meanwhile, had three runs and three hits, including a pair of doubles.
Starting pitcher
Alex Wood (2-0) went six scoreless to earn the win. The Marion, Ky., native gave up just four hits while striking out six and walking zero.
GAME 2 (7 inn.)
Mourey's hot streak spilled over into game two, as the 6-5 senior DH smashed a 2-1 pitch to right field for a two-run blast in the first inning.
UIndy continued to pile on the runs, as the Greyhound bats produced three runs in the first, three in the second and two more in the third. Saint Joseph's (5-22, 4-10) finally got on the board with single runs in the fifth and sixth, but it proved too little, too late.
Junior starter
Phil Wheeler (1-2) picked up his first win of the season by pitching four shutout innings of one-hit ball.
Winners of 12 of their last 14, the Greyhounds return home for a four-game series versus Lewis Friday and Saturday.
