INDIANAPOLIS- After the Greyhounds fell 3-2 in game one Friday, UIndy senior
Donovan Drake tossed his fourth consecutive complete-game win as the Whiteland, Ind., native shut out visiting Lewis University, 1-0, in game two. The split allowed the Hounds (17-9, 10-4, GLVC) to remain a game in front of the Flyers in the GLVC East Division standings.
The pitching gem marked the third shutout of the season for Drake. He allowed just three hits while striking out a career-high 10 batters against one walk.
By surrendering one run in his 28 previous innings of work, Drake lowered his league-leading ERA to a Gibson-like 1.01.
GAME 1 (9 inn.)
Despite being held scoreless for the first six innings, the Greyhounds had their chances in the latter frames. After falling down 3-0 through six-and-a-half, UIndy finally got to Flyer ace Tom Helwich with a pair of scores in the bottom of the seventh.
After a walk and a double started the action, senior
Scott Mourey followed with an infield single to score first baseman
Jake Hartley, while left fielder
Nate Koontz crossed home plate on a wild pitch just moments later.
Still down 3-2 in the eighth, the Hounds loaded the bases with two outs but couldn't cash in. They also squandered a one-out double from third baseman
Tyler O'Daniel in the ninth inning, making a winner of Helwich (3-0).
Greyhound starter
Hugo Lalonde (3-3) battled through seven innings, striking out four and walking three. His effort was hampered by three Greyhound fielding errors, as two of his three runs allowed were unearned.
Senior reliever Ryan Hollengberg finished the game with two hitless frames.
GAME 2 (7 inn.)
The lone run of the capper came in the bottom of the first. Senior Matt Marginer smoked a one-out double down the left field line and later touched home when the Flyers (20-8, 11-5) erred in attempting a conventional double play.
UIndy managed just two hits the rest of the way, but Drake (4-1) made sure the one-run lead held. Both starters went the distance, with LU senior Pat Lahey (2-2) taking the loss.
UIndy wraps up the season series with Lewis Saturday with a doubleheader slated for 12 p.m. Eastern.
