INDIANAPOLIS- The UIndy baseball team (19-9, 12-4 GLVC) took three out of four from Lewis this holiday weekend with a doubleheader sweep Saturday at Greyhound Park. The Hounds cruised to a 6-1 victory in game one before erasing a five-run deficit in a 12-7 come-back win in the series capper.
GAME 1 (7 inn.)
After shutting out the Flyers in game two yesterday, the Hounds held their opponents to just one run in Saturday's seven-inning opener. Senior
JaVaun West (3-0) went five strong innings to get the win. A double, a single and a sac fly in the fifth accounted for his only run allowed.
Meanwhile, the Greyhounds scored at least one run in five of their six times at bat.
Nick Whitty notched his first homerun of the year with a solo shot to start the second inning. The junior catcher also gunned down a would-be base stealer in the fifth.
Left fielder
Nate Koontz ripped a double in each of his first two ABs, while
Mike Page and
Tyler O'Daniel had one double apiece.
GAME 2 (9 inn.)
With revenge on their mind, the visiting Flyers (20-10, 11-7) jumped out to a 6-1 lead by hanging a six-spot on the board in the third inning.
The flurry chased freshman starter
Brett Collins and put the Hounds in a sizeable hole, but the persistent UIndy bats did anything but wilt, muscling 11 unanswered tallies on their unsuspecting guests.
After getting one run back in fourth, the Greyhounds exploded for five runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. All but one of the runs was earned, as junior right fielder
Bryce Feller highlighted the rallies with a three-run blast in the sixth.
Sophomore hurler
Gavin Petrea (1-0) was credited with the win, while fellow-relievers
Clint Seefeldt,
Ryan Hollenberg and
Chris Saroff combined to pitch four innings of one-run ball.
Winner of 15 of its last 18 games, UIndy hosts a twin bill against in-region Kentucky State for the second time this season when the Thorobreds arrive at Greyhound Park Tuesday, Apr. 10. The Hounds thrashed KSU 8-1 and 18-5 back on Mar. 27.
