Hounds bounce Hawks in extras

Junior Ryan Wides

EVANSVILLE, Ind.- Facing elimination at the GLVC Tournament Thursday night, the UIndy baseball team (38-14) lived to fight another day, as junior Ryan Wides delivered an RBI single in the 10th inning to lift the top-seeded Greyhounds past Quincy, 5-3.

The Hawks (28-21) looked to have all the momentum after erasing a 3-0 UIndy lead in the seventh, but closer Chris Saroff came on to pitch a season-high 3 1/3 innings of scoreless ball to give the offense the opportunity to win it.

Coming back from injury to play just his fifth game since early March, Wides entered the 10th 0-for-4.  He stepped to the plate with two on and one out and sent the first pitch he saw through the right side for a single.

The knock plated both Tyler O'Daniel and Adam Rusche, with Rusche's run coming on an error by the Quincy rightfielder.

Earlier in the night, UIndy scored its first run in the third inning without the benefit of a hit.  Wides reached on a fielding error and was moved to second on a Scott Lawley sacrifice.  After a wild pitch moved Wides to third, he advanced the final 90 feet on an RBI groundout from Mike Page.

The Hounds pushed across a couple of insurance runs in the sixth.  Getting the starting nod in Thursday's second game, catcher Brandon Stevens sparked the rally with an RBI triple over the leftfielder's head.  He later scored the Hounds' second unearned run of the night on an error by the Hawks' shortstop.

Meanwhile, starting pitcher Hugo Lalonde looked sharp through most of the game, as the Montreal native blanked Quincy through the first six innings.  Nevertheless, the Hawks battled back to tie it, as they finally got to Lalonde with three runs in the seventh – all coming with two outs.

After Lalonde was pulled with the game tied and the bases loaded, the fifth-seeded Hawks looked for more, but reliever Saroff slammed the door with a strikeout.

Saroff (2-2) was credited with the win after allowing just one hit and zero runs while striking out five.

Stevens finished 3-for-4 before being lifted for a pinch runner in the eighth.

The Hounds move on to play tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. Eastern.  They will face the winner of tomorrow's Rockhurst/Lewis match-up in another loser-go-home contest.  An audio webcast will once again be available here.
