Drake shines as No. 15 UIndy advances in NCAA play

Box score

YPSILANTI, Mich.- UIndy senior Donovan Drake notched his seventh complete game of the season in a 2-0 win versus Lewis in the first round of the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Thursday.  The top-seeded Greyhounds (43-14) are one of six teams competing in the double-elimination bracket, held at Oestrike Stadium in Ypsilanti, Mich.

Thursday's tourney opener marked the seventh meeting between UIndy and Lewis this season and the second between starters Drake and Pat Lahey (5-6).  The Greyhounds are now 5-2 in the season series versus the Flyers.

Drake (8-2) allowed just two hits and zero runs through eight innings, but Lewis (33-21) finally managed their first threat in the ninth.  The sixth-seeded Flyers started the frame with a walk and a single, but a poorly executed bunt allowed the Hounds to cut down the lead runner at third.

After freezing the next batter on a called strike three, an error on a fly ball allowed the Flyers' only run to score.  With the tying run now on third and the count 1-2, Drake blew a fastball past Lewis DH Kyle Kapka, giving the newly-named Midwest Pitcher of the Year his ninth K of the day and eighth win of the season.

The Greyhound bats backed Drake with eight hits and two runs.  UIndy pushed across single tallies in the third and sixth innings, with RBIs credited to senior Mike Page and junior Scott Lawley.

Junior Ryan Wides went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run and a stolen base, while junior Nick Whitty's fourth-inning double represented the Hounds' only extra-base hit of the day.

As the No. 1 seed, UIndy faces third-seeded and host Wayne State Friday at 2:30 p.m.  WSU lost its first-round match-up with Northern Kentucky and thus needs to win Friday to avoid being eliminated.  More info can be found at the tournament homepage.
