DeMotte breaks strikeout mark as UIndy advances in NCAA play

INDIANAPOLIS- UIndy took its fourth five-inning win in five postseason contests, and Jennifer DeMotte etched a new single-season mark for strikeouts in a 10-0 win over Wayne State Friday at Baumgartner Field.

Casey Williamson put the Greyhounds (50-7) on top in the the bottom of the first inning, sending a two-out, towering shot out of the ballpark over the scoreboard in rightcenter field. The RBI on the play was the GLVC Player and Co-Freshman of the Year's 54th of the year, good to tie the UIndy single-season mark.

The Greyhounds added four more runs in the home portion of the second frame, on a three hits and three Warrior (34-21) errors. Briana Clark started the assult with a one-out single to right center, and was followed on base by Alexa Alfaro, who singled to center.

Cori Eckerle reached on an error at shortstop, with a second miscue allowing Clark to come home. A single to right field off the bat of Taylor Russell brought in Alfaro, with Eckerle scoring as well on another error.

The innings' final tally was plated on a bases-loaded walk issued to DeMotte, scoring Russell.

Five more hits brought in four more runs for the Greyhounds in the third, highlighted by a two-out, two-run single through the right side from DeMotte, with both Kelsey Rummel and Jessica Vleck scoring on the play.

UIndy made it an even 10-run lead with one more run in the fourth, with a single through the leftside from Russell scoring Hannah Atkinson, who was in the game pinchrunning for Clark.

DeMotte (35-5) struck out six to break the Greyhound record in her NCAA Division II-leading 35th victory of the season. The junior allowed just one hit in four innings of work, before Audrey Ernst tossed one shutout inning in relief.

Clark was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored, while Russell also went 3-for-3 on the day. DeMotte and Russell each had three RBIs to pace the Greyhound offense.
