OWENSBORO, Ky.- The 17th-ranked UIndy baseball team (37-13, 27-8 GLVC) closed out the 2012 regular season with a pair of wins at Kentucky Wesleyan Sunday. The Greyhounds downed the Panthers by scores of 4-3 and 14-7 to make it a perfect 7-for-7 in season series versus GLVC East Division teams.
The two wins also secured the No. 1 seed for the Hounds at the upcoming Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament, starting Thursday in Evansville, Ind. UIndy last earned the league tourney's top seed in 2001 and went on to win the league crown.
GAME ONE (7 inn.)
Senior pitcher
JaVaun West notched his second straight quality start by holding the Panthers to one run (zero earned) over six innings. He struck out seven to help up his record to a spotless 7-0 on the season.
Nevertheless, the Panthers (19-30, 13-22) made it interesting, as KWC clean-up man Jordan White hit a two-out, two-run homer in the seventh and final inning to pull his team within one. Closer
Chris Saroff induced a fly out from the next batter, however, to earn his ninth save of the year.
One of the runs on White's homer was charged to lefty reliever
Tyler Norton, his first run allowed all season.
Senior centerfielder
Matt Maringer led the Hounds offensively with three hits and a run scored.
GAME TWO (9 inn.)
In a game that included a lightening delay in the seventh inning, UIndy produced 14 runs – eight of which came after the delay.
Third baseman
Tyler O'Daniel blasted a pair of long balls to record the first multi-homerun game by a
Greyhound since
Scott Mourey hit three bombs versus Rockhurst in the 2010 GLVC Tournament.
O'Daniel , who also had a double in the game, finished 3-for-5 with three runs and five RBIs. He was one of five Greyhounds with at least two runs driven in.
After UIndy used three pitchers to get through the first 5 2/3 innings, sophomore
Alex Wood (5-1) came on for the final 13 outs and was credited with the win.
The Greyhounds are one of just eight teams to qualify for the
2012 GLVC Tournament. The annual double-elimination tourney begins Thursday, May 10, with UIndy's first game scheduled for 3:30 p.m., Eastern. Check back in the coming days for a complete preview.
