PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 10 UIndy volleyball team swept its last two matches at the Hemingway's Island Grill Invitational with wins against Lock Haven (27-25, 19-25, 25-21, 25-15) and host West Florida (25-16, 25-20, 18-25, 25-18) to finish 3-1 on the weekend at the UWF Field House.

"It's huge to get three wins especially with the caliber of teams and the talent level under one roof in this tournament," head coach Jody Rogers said. "To play with that level of execution and intensity under the pressure we faced this weekend will help us all season long."

Tournament Most Valuable Player Kristina Kerrigan had a combined 44 kills, 25 digs and hit .306 for the Greyhounds on day two, while Meghan Binkerd averaged 11.88 assists per set to help UIndy hit .240 as a team. Senior Amy Oldenburg was also named to the all-tournament team and tallied 5.62 digs per set (45 digs) as UIndy limited its opponents to .188 attacking.

"Kristina is just a machine," Rogers said. "She really wants to have a great year. Sometimes I have to calm her down because she wants to be perfect, but she doesn't have to be. We have talent around her that can really help her out and make her even more effective.

"Amy played completely amazing. All of the coaches were talking about her. She sees the court really well and has a very good block in front of her that helps her out in the back. She's been playing for fours years now, she's smart about reading plays and doesn't freak out in pressure situations.

"Meghan doesn't really need coaching. She can really run the offense by herself now after a full year in the system, plus she's always known how to handle pressure, especially coming from high school and club teams that were always competitive.

The Greyhounds will head to Findlay next weekend for matches against No. 10 Hillsdale, No. 25 Wheeling Jesuit, Wayne State and Findlay.

MATCH ONE RECAP

Freshman Hailey Brown hit .438 with 16 kills, nine digs and three service aces to lead No. 10 UIndy volleyball past Lock Haven, 3-1 (27-25, 19-25, 25-21, 25-15), in Saturday's opening match of the Hemingway's Island Grill Invitational at UWF Field House.

Brown was joined in double figues by senior Kristina Kerrigan with 21 kills and 16 digs for the Greyhounds (2-1) against the Lady Eagles (0-3). Sophomore Meghan Binkerd passed out 47 assists with eight digs and two aces as UIndy tallied a total of eight against only three service errors.

"Arielle (Knafel) tweaked her ankle on Wednesday before we left and after playing 10 sets yesterday, it swelled up on her this morning," head coach Jody Rogers said. "Hailey stepped in and did a great job. She just swung away and was confident in her self. She's got a whip for an arm."

The backcourt duo of senior Amy Oldenburg and sophomore Kim Trojan combined for 27 digs and senior Kourtney Crawford had four blocks to help limit LHU to .184 attacking, the same mark as UIndy.

The Lady Eagles were led by Gao Xuan with 20 kills and 10 digs, while Erin Walsh led all players with 22 digs.

"We just had to find an answer for (Xuan) because she's very good and Lock Haven is a good team," Rogers said. "It took a little bit for the girls to get used to the lineup with three freshmen starting, but Meghan did a good job of spreading the ball around and getting us clicking."

UIndy fell behind quickly, 8-3, in the opening set before finding its footing and storming back for a seven-point lead, 23-16, including a back row kill and ace from Brown. Lock Haven wouldn't go quietly with a 9-1 run to give itself a chance to steal the set, 25-24. Kerrigan came up with back-to-back kills and then Crawford and freshman Hannah Bauer stuffed Xuan for the win, 27-25.

Lock Haven pulled away steadily to start the second set and UIndy was unable to seriously threaten the Lady Eagles as they evened the match, 25-19, at one set each. Lock Haven hit .281 and limited UIndy to .119 attacking.

The Greyhounds took the first multi-point lead, 11-8, but Lock Haven righted its ship to come back to lead by three, 15-12. UIndy turned it around again to regain the lead, 19-16, after back-to-back Brown terminations. Three points in a row by Lock Haven brought about the ninth tie, but it wasn't enough to stop UIndy. UIndy had four kills and an ace on a 5-1 run to end the set, 25-21, with Binkerd closing it out.

UIndy streaked to a 7-1 lead to open the fourth set, but LHU did get within two, 9-7, before UIndy pulled away again to close out the match, 25-15, with a 9-2 run. UIndy hit .344 with 14 kills and had two aces each from Binkerd and Brown.

MATCH TWO RECAP

Kerrigan hit .512 with 23 kills, while Oldenburg set a career high with 28 digs to defeat West Florida (1-2). Brown added 13 kills and 10 digs, while Binkerd had 48 assists and nine digs.

The Greyhounds hit .305 with 56 kills, while limiting UWF to .191 attacking. Autumn Duyn led the Argonauts with 20 kills and 11 digs.

A 6-1 run midway through the opening set put the Greyhounds up by six, 16-10, and they were able to continually pull away for the win, 25-16, on Kerrigan's kill. Oldenburg had nine digs in the set, while Kerrigan had four kills and Crawford added three.

Tied after 20 points, UIndy used a 5-2 run to give itself some breathing room, 15-12, but UWF came back to even things at 19. UIndy rallied again with a 6-1 run to close out the set, 25-20, with Watkins' kill on set point. UIndy hit .375 as a team with Brown leading the way with seven kills.

West Florida dominated from start to finish in the third set starting with a 9-2 lead to keep the match alive, 25-18. The Argos hit .421 with 19 kills to hold off an efficient UIndy offense that hit .333 with 14 kills.

Back-to-back kills by Kerrigan put UIndy in control, 9-5, early in the fourth set. West Florida closed within one, 12-11, but kills by Watkins and Brown increased the cushion. With the Argos still within two, 17-15, Kerrigan had a kill and Brown and Watkins blocked Duyn to start an 8-3 run to win the match, 25-18.
