Front court duo propels UIndy to victory

The front court duo of junior Leland Brown and senior James Hollowell combined for 45 points and 18 rebounds to keep No. 7 UIndy men's basketball undefeated with a home victory over Drury, 72-69, at Nicoson Hall.

Brown posted the first double-double of his career by tying his career high with 23 points and career-high 10 rebounds, while Hollowell added 22 points, eight rebounds and career-high four steals for the Greyhounds (11-0, 3-0 GLVC) in the Great Lakes Valley Conference game against the Panthers (8-4, 2-2). The win snapped a four-game losing streak for UIndy in the series and was the first home win for it against Drury.

Reece Cheatham was saddled with foul trouble in the first half, but stepped up with 15 of his 16 points in the second half to help the Greyhounds' cause.

UIndy shot 46 percent from the field (23-50), despite hitting just 4-of-17 three-pointers. UIndy was also able to get to the free throw line and hit 22-of-30 and held Drury to 11-of-18 at the stripe. The Panthers shot 41.7 percent (25-60) and made 8-of-23 three-pointers.

Brandon Lockhart led Drury with 21 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Drake Patterson added 13 points. The Greyhounds held Drury's leading scorer, Alex Hall (18.7 ppg), to just five points on 1-of-7 shooting.

The Greyhounds led by four, 53-49, after Hall made his only basket with 10 minutes to play. After trading turnovers, Brennan McElroy fed Hollowell underneath for one of his five assists to start a 7-0 run. Cheatham nailed a three-pointer from the corner and then Brown scored on the fast break to put UIndy up 11, 60-49, with 6:54 remaining.

The Panthers wouldn't go away and scored the next nine to close within a deuce, 60-58, with 3:43 remaining. Lockhart fouled Cheatham on the next possession to stop the run and then Brown made a pair 35 seconds later to get the lead back to six, 64-58, with 2:59 left.

Drury answered again and scored the next four points to make it a two-point game, 64-62, with 95 seconds to play. Cheatham took over late in the shot clock for UIndy and drove down the left side of the lane to hit a driving lay-up, while being fouled by Patterson. Cheatham hit the free throw and then converted two more with 38 seconds left to put UIndy up seven, 69-62, after Hollowell stole the ball from Ian Carter.

The Greyhounds shot 52 percent in the second half (12-23) and hit 11-of-14 free throws to hold off Drury.

The first half belonged to UIndy as they went on an 11-2 run after Drury scored the first basket to lead by seven, 11-4, after a three-point play by Brown. The Panthers came back to grab a six-point advantage, 27-21, with 6:35 left in the half, but consecutive scores in the paint by Hollowell, Joe Daniels and Brown evened the game.

UIndy grew the lead to three, 33-30, after back-to-back three-point plays by Brown and then Hollowell hit two free throws with 56 seconds left to put UIndy up four, 35-31, at the break.

Hollowell and Brown combined for 30 of UIndy's 35 first half points with Cheatham and Tyrae Robinson in foul trouble. The first half  also saw 25 fouls called that resulted in UIndy making 11-of-16 free throws and Drury hit 4-of-7.

The Greyhounds remain at Nicoson Hall on Saturday at 3:15 p.m. to host Missouri S&T (4-7, 0-4 GLVC). The Miners lost at Saint Joseph's, 82-72, on Thursday night.
