ON TAP
UIndy opens the 2013-14 season on the road for a trio of exhibition matches. The Greyhounds face the Dayton Flyers, Indiana State Sycamores and Xavier Musketeers on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
Â
BACK TO THE BIG DANCE
Last season, the Greyhounds made an NCAA Tournament appearance for the fifth time in six seasons, and recorded 19 wins for the second consecutive year.
Â
The Greyhounds traveled to Ashland, Ohio, to face the top-seeded Eagles in the first round of the 2013 NCAA D-II Midwest Regional. UIndy fell 70-56 to Ashland, the eventual Division II national champions.
Â
The Hounds sport a 5-10 record in their ten NCAA appearances. The team advanced to the Sweet 16 in 2009, good for its deepest-ever run.
Â
RETURN OF THE MAC
The UIndy backcourt duo of
Katy McIntosh and
Kristin Turner garnered All-Midwest Region First Team and All-GLVC First Team recognition last year. McIntosh and Turner were the highest scoring tandem in the GLVC, and both were in the top four in both points and assists. They became the seventh and eighth players to reach 1,000 points in a Greyhound uniform in just three seasons.
Â
While Turner graduated, McIntosh returns for her senior season in 2013-14. She shot .532 from the field last year, leading the GLVC and finishing second among all Division II guards.
Â
BLOCK PARTY
Sydney Weinert became just the fourth Greyhound in program history to amass 100 career blocks, including a school-record 67 blocked shots in 2011-12. Along with Weinert,
Kirsten Gliesmann and
Eliza Wortman played large roles in the Greyhounds' 181 team blocks last season, easily good for a new school record. UIndy's 6.2 blocks per game were second in Division II. Gliesmann (2nd, 48), Weinert (3rd, 41) and Wortman (5th, 34) all ranked in the top five in the conference. Gliesmann and Wortman both return for the 2013-14 season.
Â
FOUL PLAY
After making more than 100 free throws in each of her first two seasons at UIndy, McIntosh continued her relentless effort to get to the charity stripe in 2012-13. She made a personal-best 152 foul shots to set a new program mark for free throws made by a junior. Her career total of 377 heading into her senior season is 151 shy of the school's record.
Â
PERCENTAGE POINTS
After ranking 12th in Division II in field goal percentage in 2011-12, the Greyhounds shot nearly 46 percent from the floor in 2012-13, good for third in the nation.
Â
CHARITY WORK
The Greyhounds also had significant success at the free throw line, as the team compiled a solid .766 team free throw percentage last season. Â The total was good for 11th in Division II, while also ranking second in team history.
Â
The 2004-05 team is the only other Greyhound women's squad with a higher mark, as their .801 FT percentage led all NCAA Divisions that season.
Â
RELOADING
Despite losing two key players in Turner and Weinert, the Hounds add three transfers and two freshmen to the 2013-14 lineup.
Â
Senior
Erin Murphy brings the most experience to UIndy, entering her final collegiate season after spending three years at IPFW. Last season, Murphy earned All-Summit League honorable mention after averaging 12.8 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game as a junior.
Â
Sophomore
Emily Alfrey spent her freshman season at Lindenwood, where she started four of 23 games for the Lions.
Princess German is also entering her sophomore year after transferring from Milwaukee-Wisconsin.
Â
Freshman Mikala Lomax comes from Columbus East in Columbus, Ind., where she was named to
Hoosier Basketball Magazine's "Top 100," "Top 60 Workout," and Third Team All-State her senior year. Fellow freshman
Victoria Schaefer averaged 15.5 points, 5.9 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game over her junior and senior seasons at Southridge in Dale, Ind.
FAMILIAR FOE
Sunday's match against Xavier marks the fourth time in the past three seasons the teams will meet. Last year, the Musketeers won 67-51 in Cincinnati.
Katy McIntosh scored 13 and grabbed six rebounds for the Greyhounds.
