UIndy volleyball claims GLVC Championship

Box Score
ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – UIndy volleyball won the GLVC Tournament Championship 3-1 over Truman State (25-23, 28-26, 23-25, 25-21), winning the fourth conference title in program history.

Hailey Brown, who led the Greyhounds with 22 kills, totaled 53 kills over the tournament.

"I thought we had great teamwork, and we worked really well passing the ball," said Brown, a Medora, Ind., native. "Meghan (Binkerd) put the ball exactly where I wanted, and she did that for the other attackers, as well."

Coach Jason Reed recognized the significance of Brown's offensive performance.

"Hailey Brown stepped up this entire weekend and had an incredible tournament," said Reed, of his sophomore outside hitter. "She had big swing after big swing at crucial points in each set."

UIndy opened the match with a 25-20 win in set one, as Brown kept her impressive GLVC Tournament rolling with seven kills. The Greyhounds hit .238 compared to .159 for Truman.

The Bulldogs had a chance to even the match in the second set. Serving on set-point two separate times, Truman ran into a stubborn Greyhound squad that wouldn't surrender the match. The Hounds got kills from Julia Watkins and Brittany Anglemyer in each case before winning the match, 28-26.

Truman responded with a win in another back-and-forth set, taking the third 25-23. The Bulldogs hit .278, getting five kills from Allie Brak.

The Greyhounds took the next set, 25-21, and celebrated their fourth conference title in program history. With the title on the line, neither team wanted to surrender a single point, often resulting in remarkable displays of athleticism to keep the ball and point alive. UIndy managed to come out on top in many of these impressive rallies.

"We talked in the locker room about winning the effort battle, and the long rallies are an example of that," said Reed. "Both sides played fantastic volleyball at different points in the match. Over the course of this weekend it's basically a war of attrition. I think we outlasted them a little bit longer, I think we controlled first contacts better than they did for long stretches of time."

The teams tied 26 times during the match, and the lead was exchanged on 10 separate occasions. Ultimately, the Hounds earned the conference crown. Brittany Anglemyer, Kenzie Bruggeman and Julia Watkins each recorded 10 kills, and setter Meghan Binkerd totaled 55 assists. Kimberly Trojan had a gutty defensive performance, tallying 23 digs, while Bruggeman (20), Binkerd (14) and Brown (14) also finished with double-digit digs.

"I'm glad all our hard work paid off," said Brown. "I know we work really hard in practices, and it means a lot to all of us. Winning as a team makes it that much better."

Reed's squad has now won 10 matches in a row, and hasn't gone five sets since the Nov. 9, 3-2 victory over Truman.

"There's no big change of game plan from here on out," he said. "It's staying consistent, staying disciplined and doing what we've done the last few weeks."

"I think we need to give ourselves a little credit," said Brown, of her team's recent success. "We're doing really well, and we need to realize it and keep going."

UIndy secured a spot in the NCAA Division II Championship with the win, and finds out its opponent Monday in the NCAA Selection Show that will air at 7:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.
