ON TAP
UIndy opens the 2013-14 regular season at the CCA D-II Tip-Off West Coast Classic, facing fifth-ranked Emporia State, Montana State-Billings and Pittsburg State.
Â
EMPORIA STATE OF MIND
The Emporia State Lady Hornets open the season ranked No. 5 in the WBCA Preseason Coaches' Poll after advancing to the Sweet 16 in last year's NCAA Tournament, where their season ended in a 75-74 loss to Augustana. Prior to the NCAA Tournament, the Lady Hornets won the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament over Central Missouri, 67-51. Emporia State, located in Emporia, Kansas, finished the year 23-9 (13-5 MIAA). The Lady Hornets return three of five starters including leading scorer Laura Patrick (14.6 pts/gm), leading rebounder Merissa Quick (6.6 rbs/gm) and assist leader Rheanna Egli (3.5 ast/gm). This will be the first meeting between the Lady Hornets and Greyhounds.
Â
The Lady Hornets defeated NAIA Central Methodist University 94-37 in their first exhibition game this season, and fell to Division-I University of Kansas 61-53 in the second.
Â
ABOUT MONTANA STATE-BILLINGS
UIndy has also never faced Montana State University Billings, who fell in the opening round of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Tournament last season to Seattle Pacific University, 63-60, ending its year. The Yellowjackets, who finished 17-10 (11-7 GNAC), were picked to finish first in the preseason GNAC coaches' poll this season. The high pick is due in large part to senior Bobbi Knudsen, who has been selected preseason All-American by the WBCA and the Preseason Player of the Year by the GNAC. The Yellowjackets also return two other starters – Janiel Olson and Kayleen Goggins – picked to the preseason All-Conference team.
Â
The Yellowjackets split two exhibition games, losing 69-65 to D-I University of Montana before defeating NAIA Rocky Mountain College 90-58.
Â
SCOUTING PITTSBURG STATE
In the teams' one and only meeting in 1991, the Gorillas defeated the Greyhounds 76-73 on a neutral court. Pittsburg State, located in Pittsburg, Kansas, is picked to finish fifth in the MIAA this season. The Gorillas went 17-10 (11-7 MIAA) last year, and lost to Missouri Western in the first round of the MIAA Tournament, 67-71. The top returner for the Gorillas is junior All-American Lizzy Jeronimus. Last season, Jeronimus led Pittsburg State and the MIAA with 18.4 points per game, also chipping in 6.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game.
Â
In two exhibitions this season, the Gorillas lost to D-I opponents Nebraska, 98-47, and Kansas, 85-54.
Â
BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK
UIndy faced three D-I opponents in the preseason exhibitions, traveling to Dayton, Indiana State and Xavier in a three-day stretch.
Â
Senior
Katy McIntosh averaged 12.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists over the three games. Fellow senior
Dajana Jovanovic finished with 6.3 points and 8.0 rebounds per game, including a 10-rebound performance against Dayton. Sophomore transfer
Princess German averaged 8.3 points per game, finishing with 11 against Xavier. Senior

Â
GOING BACK TO CALI
The UIndy women's basketball team hasn't played in The Golden State since the 2008-09 Disney D-II Tip-Off West Coast Classic. The Greyhounds were crowned champions after beating Cal Poly Pomona, Central Washington, and Concordia to finish as the only undefeated team.
Â
HIT THE ROAD, JACK
In a nine-day span from November 8 to November 17, the UIndy women's basketball team will travel some 5450 miles. It begins with the trip Anaheim, accounting for over 4000 miles alone both ways. The Greyhounds then travel over 580 miles to Lake Superior State November 15. The next day, the Hounds hit the road for a 480 mile drive to Ashland, Ohio, to face the defending champions. A "short" 260 mile drive back to the University of Indianapolis completes the excursion.
