INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy women's tennis team won third place at the 2013 Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament with a Saturday morning triumph over Rockhurst, 5-1, at the UIndy Tennis Center.
The Greyhounds (10-4) notched their best GLVC Championship finish since taking second place in the 2007 championships in Springfield, Mo. UIndy will now await the NCAA Championships selection annoucement on Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET on NCAA.com. UIndy earned wins this weekend over No. 6 Rockhurst and No. 7 Missouri-St. Louis. Five teams will represent the Midwest Region.
Rockhurst (13-8) earned the early lead with an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles, but the Hounds were in control at the other two spots.
Taylor Eckert and
Allie Smith evened the match at one with an 8-2 win at No. 1, while
Alex Covington and
Claire Liles gave the Greyhounds a lead they would not relinquish with an 8-4 win at No. 3.
The Greyhounds won the first set in five of the singles matches to maintain their momentum from the doubles.
Eckert took the third point for UIndy at No. 2 after Kim Vrugteveen retired due to injury with Eckert leading 6-3, 1-0.
Action continued on five courts another 20 minutes until
Brooke Boyts put the Hounds on the verge of victory with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Abby Kayser at No. 6 singles.
The race for match point was close between
Macey Speer at No. 3 and Liles at No. 5, with Liles earning the honors with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Christine Schatz. Speer was close behind leading 40-0 with a lead of 6-2, 5-2 over Alex Schelble.
