LOUISVILLE – The UIndy women's tennis team bounced back from an early deficit to win all six singles matches and defeat Bellarmine, 7-2, at the Eddie Weber Tennis Center on Saturday.
The Greyhounds (5-3, 2-1 GLVC) handed the Knights (12-6, 4-1 GLVC) their first Great Lakes Valley Conference loss of the season by winning a quartet of three-set matches in singles.
The Knights won doubles matches at No. 2 (9-7) and No. 3 (8-6), but the Greyhounds salvaged a point as the top pair of
Taylor Eckert and
Allie Smith defeated Caitlin Hanley and Michelle McFerran 8-6.
Eckert picked up a second win at No. 2 singles over Evann Waschuk 6-3, 6-0, while
Claire Liles also won in quick fashion with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 6 over Jamie Claeys to put UIndy in front, 3-2.
Closing out Bellarmine wouldn't be easy as sets were split at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4, but unlike against Lewis last weekend, the Greyhounds were superior in the third set.
Smith defeated Hanley 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 at No. 1, while fellow freshman
Macey Speer also rallied after losing the first set and defeated McFerran 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Rachel Barger won at No. 4 over Hannah-Rose Hagan 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
Kasey Land closed out the scoring for UIndy by earning the win against Abby Dorton 4-6, 7-5, (15-13) in a lengthy super tiebreaker after the match had been decided.
The Greyhounds continue their road trip on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET against McKendree (6-5, 2-2 GLVC).
