INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy softball team recorded a big win at the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional 1 Saturday morning, downing archrival Lewis, 4-1, at Baumgartner Field. The Greyhounds (52-6) advance to Sunday's regional final still without a loss in the double-elimination tournament.
Saturday marked the seventh time the GLVC East Division foes have faced off this season. Though the Hounds won four of the previous six meetings, things didn't go as planned the last time they faced sophomore Kelly Bowler; the 5-11 all-conference pitcher shut down the UIndy offense in a 2-0 win at Lewis Apr. 27.
Bowler looked sharp through two innings and took a 1-0 lead into the third, but the Greyhounds – designated as the visiting team – generated two tallies to snatch the lead. Three Hounds had base hits in the frame, including
Taylor Russell's opposite-field double.
After threatening in the fourth, UIndy picked up single insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Freshman
Erika Goodwin delivered a two-out RBI with a single in the sixth, while
Jennifer DeMotte blasted an RBI double in the seventh.
Starting at pitcher for the second straight day, DeMotte (26-4) scattered seven hits in a complete-game effort. She allowed the Flyers' very first batter to score, then shut out Lewis for the final 6 2/3 innings.
UIndy awaits the winner of this afternoon's game between Lewis and Ashland. UIndy will have to be defeated twice on “Championship Sunday” to be denied a trip to the Midwest Super Regional. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. ET.
