INDIANAPOLIS – Facing elimination Saturday afternoon, the No. 1-ranked UIndy softball team (54-7) delivered a clutch 4-2 win versus ninth-ranked Grand Valley State in game two of the NCAA Division II Midwest Super Regional. After GSVU (43-7) defeated the Greyhounds in game one Friday, Saturday's result forces a third and deciding game at 3:30 p.m. this afternoon.
With GVSU's game-one starter (and winner) Hannah Santora in the circle again for game two, UIndy got on the board first with a pair of runs in the third inning. Freshman
Erika Goodwin started the rally with a bunt single, and after a sacrifice from
Taylor Russell, two more infield singles loaded the bases with one out.
Jennifer DeMotte and
Alexa Alfaro followed with a walk and a ground out, respectively, to give each an RBI and put the Lakers in a two-run hole.
Later, an RBI double from sophomore
Casey Williamson put the Hounds up three in the fifth inning, but GVSU senior Katie Martin answered with line shot off the centerfield wall to drive in two Lakers and pull her team within one heading into the sixth.
UIndy got one run back with an insurance score in the top of the seventh on DeMotte's RBI groundout.
Grand Valley had a chance in the seventh after an error and a single put two on and one out with Martin coming to the plate, but UIndy pitched around the Lakers' big stick to load the bases. The move paid off as freshman pitcher
Morgan Foley coaxed a groundout and a foul pop to notch the victory and force a game three.
Foley (28-4) allowed eight hits and walked three but held Grand Valley to just two runs. Williamson had two hits, a walk and a stolen base, while Rummel amassed three runs, three knocks and two steals.
The two Midwest powers will decide the regional champ with a third and deciding game later this afternoon. Live stats for game three are available
