EAST PEORIA, Ill. – With its second win of the day, the top-seeded UIndy Greyhounds (50-4) remained in the winners' bracket at the 2013 Great Lakes Valley Conference Softball Championship Saturday with an 8-2 victory against division-rival Lewis (27-15). The result also ensured UIndy its second straight 50-win season.
Playing under the lights for the first time this season, the Hounds trailed 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth, but the UIndy bats awoke to the tune of seven runs in the final two at bats to advance to within one win of the finals.
With the Hounds down a single run, senior
Kelsey Rummel recorded career hit No. 200 with a single to lead off the fifth. Her milestone knock would eventually spark a four-run rally, but not before a sac bunt, a wild pitch and a 15-minute rain delay.
Later with Rummel on third and and two outs on the scoreboard, Lewis head coach George DiMatteo opted to intentionally walk both GLVC Player of the Year
Casey Williamson and all-conference first teamer
Jennifer DeMotte.
The free passes brought
Alexa Alfaro to the plate with the bases loaded and the junior promptly made the Flyers pay with an infield single to plate the tying run.
That was merely a flesh wound, however, compared to the costly Lewis error that followed, allowing three more Greyhounds to touch home and give UIndy its first lead of the game.
The Hounds capped the scoring in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run double from Williamson and a sac fly by DeMotte to all but seal the win.
In the circle, freshman
Morgan Foley (26-3) compiled 13 strikeouts in the complete-game win. She managed to stifle the Lewis offense in six of the seven innings, with a two-run home run by Kelsey Ullrich in the fourth accounting for the whole of the Flyers' damage.
Krysta Bradford provided the only scoring in the game's first three innings by blasting a two-out solo homer in the second. It marked the second home run of the season and just the fourth in 267 career at bats for the junior shortstop.
The Greyhounds will face GLVC West-champ Misouri-St. Louis Sunday at noon ET.

Notes: UIndy's 50 wins ties the school record for victories set just last season…Rummel joined DeMotte as one of only four Greyhounds to ever reach 200 career hits...With her sixth-inning double, Wiliamson broke her own school record for most total bases in a season.
