INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy men's tennis team swept the Marian Knights
9-0 in their first spring dual match of the season.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 2-0 advantage when No. 3 and No. 1 doubles finished just minutes apart, both resulting in resounding wins for UIndy.
Sophomore
Luke Hubert and senior
Caleb Fellers defeated Marian's Taylor Kinney and Nick Batuello 8-3 in No. 3 doubles to capture the first point.
Freshman
Nico Kastunowicz and sophomore
Ryan Frankel followed moments later with an 8-3 win of their own over Jason Denton and Marty Pochop in the No. 1 doubles.
With all eyes on the only doubles match left, UIndy took a 3-0 lead on a comeback win by sophomore
Fausto Cordova and freshman Marco Torres. The pair trailed Danny Albert and Ryan Heuer 6-3, on the edge of relinquishing the match. Instead, the young duo rallied behind the home crowd and fellow teammates cheering them on, storming back to win the match 8-7(3). Â
UIndy sat in the driver's seat heading into singles play, and didn't let off the pedal, winning every set across the board.
Kastunowicz, ranked 16th on the preseason ITA Midwest Regional top 20 singles list, handled Albert 6-1, 6-1 in No. 1, starting his collegiate dual match season in commanding fashion.
His doubles partner, Frankel, took the No. 2 singles match over Marian's Jack Hiatt, 6-2, 6-3. The English native is in his second spring season for UIndy, finishing 3-5 last season in the No. 1 slot.
Coming off his emotional doubles victory, Cordova again found himself in a tough match, this one with the Knights' Pochop. After winning the opening set 6-4, Cordova prevailed in a close 7-6(2) second to clinch the point for UIndy.
Playing in his first collegiate match, Torres faced Heuer, a familiar foe from their intense doubles bout. The freshman from Mexico City got the better of Heuer again, winning 6-4, 6-1 in No. 4 singles.
Hubert, last year's team MVP, represented UIndy in No. 5 singles, and defeated Kinney 6-0, 6-3 to earn the Greyhounds a point.
On the last court, Greyhound newcomer
Fernando Taricano won his first collegiate match over Marian's Zach Hilton, 6-3, 6-2.
Just for good measure, UIndy's
Austin Ruddell defeated Marian's T. Grant Cunningham 8-5 in an exhibition match.
The Hounds are back in action Sunday, along with the women's team, hosting Tennessee Wesleyan at 1:00 p.m.
