ST. LOUIS- Behind a pair of goals from
Brendon Widau, the six-seed UIndy men's soccer team upended three-seed Missouri-St. Louis 2-0 in Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Soccer Championship Touranment quarterfinal play Sunday.
UIndy (10-5-3) jumped on the board early to take its second win over the Tritons (12-4-2) on the season, with Widau putting in his first goal of the season at the three-minute mark in the first half. Widau took a ball chipped in by
Leo Cunningham and headed it home from the left side to put the Hounds up 1-0 early. After the half, Widau would score again, this time putting away a rebound of an
Ngwese Ebangwese shot in front of the goal.
The Greyhounds held the narrow 14-13 advantage in shots over the host Tritons, while both teams were awarded five corner kicks in the match.
Zak Mitiche led the UIndy offense with three shots, while
Andrew Verhonik made five saves in facing the 13 UMSL shots on the match.
UIndy advances to play two-seed Drury in the tournament's semifinal round Friday at top-seeded Quincy. The Greyhounds faced the Panthers in last year's GLVC semis, with UIndy coming out with a 3-2 win in overtime. The other semifinal match will feature the host Hawks and four-seed Lewis.
