Hounds repeat as outright GLVC champs

ROLLA, Mo. – The 25th-ranked UIndy football team (9-1, 7-0) clinched their third consecutive outright Great Lakes Valley Conference title Saturday, downing host Missouri S&T, 30-12.  The Greyhounds are a perfect 22-0 in conference games since the GLVC began sponsoring football in 2012.

UIndy limited S&T to just 158 total yards, lowest of any of its 10 opponents this season.  Only one of S&T's 14 offensive drives went more than 19 yards.

The Miners (3-7, 2-5) particularly struggled on 3rd down, converting just 2-of-14 attempts that resulted in 11 punts.  Sophomore linebacker Rob Dury led the UIndy "D" with nine tackles, while Derrick Bryant, Sam Daggy and Darion Howard combined for four sacks.

As they have done seven of their 10 games this season, the Hounds got on the board first with a two-yard touchdown run by senior Matt Ripp, his first of two scores on the day.  The play was set up nicely by a 55-yard catch-and-run by sophomore wideout Kevin Teglia.

UIndy sandwiched halftime with two more TDs before S&T could find the end zone.  Freshman tight end Alex Kimack corralled a five-yard TD pass from quarterback Connor Barthel early in the second, while Ripp punctuated the opening drive of the third with a 14-yard score.

After nine consecutive punts and an unsuccessful 4th-down try, the Miners finally broke through eight minutes into the second half.  A 40-yard interception return put the S&T offense at the UIndy 3-yard line, allowing freshman running back Charles Bournes to punch it in for the home team's first score.

The Miners' only sustained drive of the game came early in the fourth quarter when they managed to cover 73 yards on seven plays on the way to their second and final TD of the afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Greyhound offense controlled the ball for 13:49 of the final 17 minutes of game time, giving S&T a heavy dose of Ripp and fellow-running-back Andrew Walker.

Reigning GLVC Special Teams Player of the Week Scott Miller capped three of UIndy's final four possessions with field goals, splitting the uprights from 35, 39 and 33 yards.

Ripp finished with 131 rushing yards on 21 carries, good for his sixth 100-yard game of the season.  He also surpassed 1,000 yards for the year, giving UIndy a 1,000-yard back for the third straight season.

Barthel finished 19-for-34 passing for 286 yards and a touchdown.  Four Greyhounds amassed at least 55 receiving yards, including Logan Young and his game-high 72.

The win keeps the Hounds very much alive in the playoff hunt.  UIndy came into the weekend in fifth in the latest set of regional rankings.  The top-six teams in each region after next weekend advance to the NCAA Division II playoffs.

The Greyhounds' final regular season contest comes at home when they host William Jewell next weekend.  Kickoff from Key Stadium is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET, Saturday, Nov. 15.
