INDIANAPOLIS- The UIndy baseball team added a late signee Tuesday evening, with Owen Mahan signing his National Letter of Intent in the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center with his new teammates and coaches present for the event.
Owen, or "Big Daddy Jack Rabbit" as he has been dubbed by his new coach
Gary Vaught, was matched with the Greyhound baseball team through TeamIMPACT. The New England-based organization seeks to match children with life-threatening diseases or injuries with college and university athletic teams to give them a social support network.
"I hope everyone saw a little boy with an incredible zest for living up here today," Coach Vaught said. "We all have a lot to learn from Owen; we all ought to live every day how he lives. Owen will inspire our ballclub and remind us that we've been blessed with the opportunity to be at this great university and play baseball."
Also present for the signing were Owen's parents, Jim and Susan, his nurse, Phillip, and Great Lakes Valley Conference Commissioner Jim Naumovich. Owen will wear No. 1 for the Hounds, as he is the team's number one player, and fielded questions from his new teammates and the media following his making it official by signing his NLI.
