SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The UIndy men's basketball season came to an end Sunday night, falling
82-76 to sixth-seeded Michigan Tech in the second round of the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional. The No. 2-seed Greyhounds (24-5) trimmed a double-digit lead down to four points with just over two minutes to go, but the Huskies (24-7) hit 16 of 18 free throw attempts from that point to put the game away.
Senior
Reece Cheatham was stellar in what ultimately was his final collegiate contest. The local product and Pike High School graduate hit a personal-best eight 3-pointers on the way to a career-high-tying 33 points.
Senior
Tyrae Robinson (12 points) and junior
Kendall Vieke (10) joined Cheatham in double figures, while junior
Brennan McElroy added nine rebounds, six assists and two dunks.
Meanwhile, junior Brian Stelzer led the way for the Huskies. The All-GLIAC Second Team honoree poured in every one of his 32 points in the second half, including 25 of his team's final 29 points. He was a perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line,
Michigan Tech moves on to the regional regional final against top-seeded Drury Tuesday night. UIndy finishes the season 24-5 to notch the second-highest win total in program history.
After trailing by as many as 12 midway through the first half, the Hounds orchestrated a 10-2 run to get right back in it. McElroy's baseline drive and dunk sparked the rally.
UIndy's deficit would settle at a manageable four points at the half despite the Hounds shooting just 36 percent from the field and committing 10 turnovers.
UIndy came out of the break with renewed intensity, evidenced by a spectacular defensive effort by McElroy. On one Tech possession, the fourth-year junior emphatically smacked a Husky shot attempt off the backboard, and then after Tech corralled the bounce, he drew a charge to force the turnover.
Cheatham quickly followed with a pair of 3-pointers, fueling a two-minute, eight-point burst by the veteran guard to make it 46-44 Hounds with 13 minutes to go.
It marked the second of eight lead changes between the 14- and seven-minute marks, as the teams traded big shot after big shot. But with 7:02 on the clock, Stelzer began an amazing offensive salvo that saw the 6-1 sharp shooter score the Huskies next 21 points.
Nevertheless, UIndy battled to make it a four-point game late. After Stelzer's fifth and final three of the night made it 66-56 Tech, sophomore
Jordan Loyd completed the rare four-point play by knocking down a trey while getting fouled and sinking the ensuing free throw.
A minute later, two Cheatham free throws made it 66-62 with 2:13 to play. Shortly thereafter, the Hounds began fouling to extend the game, but Stelzer and the Huskies eventually shut the door at the line, sinking 16 of 18 attempts down the stretch.
Cheatham and Vieke combined for four triples in the final 63 seconds, but the deficit was too large at that point.
Notes: UIndy seniors Leland Brown, Reece Cheatham, Joe Daniels, Jared Grady and Tyrae Robinson combined the help the Hounds to an 83-32 in their time at UIndy, setting a school record for wins in the four-year period … Cheatham finished his UIndy career with 1,279 points, good for 20th all-time. His 184 career 3-pointers rank fifth at the school.
