Gouard named GLVC Coach of the Year; four Hounds on all-conference list

UIndy men's basketball head coach Stan Gouard
INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Lakes Valley Conference released its men's basketball year-end awards Tuesday, with a number of Greyhounds receiving recognition.  Senior Reece Cheatham and junior Joe Lawson were both on the First Team All-GLVC list, senior Tyrae Robinson was named second team all-conference, Robinson and junior Brennan McElroy were on the all-defensive team ledger, while head coach Stan Gouard was named the 2014 GLVC Coach of the Year.

Tuesday's release marks the first Coach of the Year honor for Gouard.  The sixth-year head man led the Greyhounds to a stellar 23-3 record in the regular season, good for a program-first third straight 20-win campaign.  UIndy ranks fourth in nation in field goal percentage (.515), fifth in scoring offense (88.8 ppg) and 10th in turnover margin (+4.6).

Gouard owns an overall 103-64 (.617) record as a head coach, all coming at Indianapolis.

Both of UIndy's first-team honorees average more than 15 points per game, with Lawson at 15.7 and Cheatham at 15.1.  Lawson also tops the Greyhounds in rebounding (6.9 rpg) as sports a solid .562 field goal percentage, while Cheatham recently scored his 1,200th career point at UIndy and currently ranks fifth in the school annals in career 3-pointers made (166).

Cheatham was a named to the All-GLVC Second Team last season.

Robinson compiled 13.1 points per game on the way to second-team laurels.  He also picked up his second consecutive GLVC All-Defensive Team nod, while McElroy garnered his first.  A native of Decatur, Ill., McElroy was the league's only unanimous all-defensive selection.

Gouard and his Greyhounds begin postseason play this week after earning the No. 3 seed at the upcoming GLVC Championship Tournament, held at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind.  UIndy faces division-rival Bellarmine in a quarterfinal match-up Friday, Mar. 7 at 9:30 p.m. ET.
