ST. LOUIS – For the first time in nine years the UIndy men's tennis team is headed to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament championship match.
By defeating McKendree (19-5, 4-2 GLVC) 5-2 Saturday morning in the Dwight Davis Tennis Center, the 31st-ranked Greyhounds (15-2, 6-0) became the first UIndy men's squad to win a GLVC Tournament semifinal since the 2004-05 season.
This Greyhound team, ranked No. 2 in the Midwest Region, can also be the first to bring the conference title back to Indianapolis since 1995 with a win over 12th-ranked Drury (21-2, 5-0) Sunday in the championship match.
Saturday's bout was the second meeting between the teams, with the Greyhound handing the Bearcats an 8-1 loss nearly one month ago in the UIndy Tennis Center.
McKendree, the East division's 3-seed, upset the West's 2-seed and host Missouri-St. Louis 5-4 Friday to advance to the semifinal. The Bearcats came into the conference tournament ranked eighth in the Midwest Region, looking for another win to solidify a spot in the NCAA Regional Tournament.
UIndy put a damper on those hopes in Saturday's win, and got out to a 2-1 advantage after doubles play.
GLVC Men's Freshman of the Year,
Nico Kastunowicz, teamed with fellow All-Conference selection
Ryan Frankel to defeat McKendree's Luciano Misitrano and Justin Leskera 8-3 in No. 1 doubles.
After dropping their match against Truman yesterday,
Fausto Cordova and Marco Torres bounced back to take No. 2 doubles 8-3 over Aleix Alvarez and Martin Martins.
For just the second time this season,
Luke Hubert and
Fernando Taricano lost a doubles match, falling 8-6 to the Bearcats' Maximilian Ilic and Blake Kebblewhite in No. 3. The pair dropped to 12-2 overall for the year.
Leading 2-1, the Greyhounds won three of the first four completed singles matches to advance to Sunday's championship.
Frankel won in straight sets over Alvarez, 6-0, 6-1 in No. 2 singles for his seventh victory in a row.
Hubert improved to a perfect 17-0 this spring (24-4 in singles for 2013-14) with a 6-0, 6-1 sweep against Cameron Randall in the No. 5 draw.
The third point came in No. 6 singles, where Taricano defeated Martins 6-3, 6-0. His eight-match winning streak trails only Hubert for longest on the team.
Kastunowicz and Cordova each won the first set of their respective matches, but did not finish once the Greyhounds clinched the semifinal victory.
UIndy faces the Panthers, ranked No. 1 in the Midwest Region, Sunday at 1 p.m. ET for the GLVC Championship. Drury defeated Southern Indiana 5-1 to earn a spot in the title match.
