Back-to-back GLVC titles for men's golf

COLUMBUS, Ind. - The UIndy men's golf team successfully defended its Great Lakes Valley Conference crown Tuesday, besting Missouri-St. Louis, 3-2, in the match play final.  The win ensured the Greyhounds their second straight conference championship, fourth in the last seven years and 15th overall - most in the league.  The 2014 GLVC Championship was held at Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus, Ind.

The final 18 holes were full of drama, as the top two seeds trading points in the first four pairings.  In match two, freshman Andrew VanAelst carded his seond straight red number, as his two-under 70 easily scored a point for the Hounds.  Later i
n the fourth match, senior David Frank outlasted UMSL's Warren Crow in a back-and-forth thriller, 76-77.

With the team match-up all square, the fifth and final match featured 2013 GLVC Champion Joe Atkisson of Missouri-St. Louis against 2014 GLVC Champion Tucker Guisewite of Indianapolis.  Guisewite fired a 73 in the afternoon to earn a four-stroke victory against Atkisson's 77.

The win held additional significant for the Greyhounds as it secured them the GLVC's automatic postseason bid.  UIndy is now assured of its 10th consecutive trip to the NCAA Division II Regional, slated for May 5-7 in Eureka, Mo.  The official announcement of the field is scheduled for Friday, Apr. 25.

Update, Tuesday afternoon
For the second time in as many seasons, the UIndy men's golf team will be playing for the Great Lakes Valley Conference title after dominating in this morning's match play semifinal.  The Hounds defeated Lewis 4 1/2 -1/2, with the Flyers mustering just a half point in five head-to-head pairings.  Awaiting the Hounds in this afternoon's final are the second-seeded Missouri-St. Louis Tritons, who defeated McKendree by an identical 4 1/2 - 1/2 score.

Update, Tuesday morning
The match play semifinals of the 2014 Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Golf Championship are underway.  After a successful performance in the 54-hole stroke play portion, UIndy earned the No. 1 seed in the medal/match play segment.  The Greyhounds are taking on fourth-seeded Lewis in this morning's semifinal, while No. 2-seed Missouri-St. Louis is facing third-seeded McKendree.  The two winners will face off this afternoon in the match play final to determine the 2014 league champion.

The championship is being held at Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus, Ind.  Click here for more coverage from the GLVC.

Update, Monday evening
Led by individual medalist Tucker Guisewite, the UIndy men's golf team earned the No. 1 seed in the upcoming medal/match play portion at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Monday.  The Greyhounds (289-279-298) topped the 14-team leaderboard during the 54-hole stroke-play segment with a team score of +2, besting runner-up Missouri-St. Louis by five strokes.
 
The Hounds while be joined in match play by Missouri-St. Louis, McKendree and Lewis.  UIndy will take on Lewis in tomorrow morning's semifinal match-up, with the winner advancing to face the victory of UMSL/McKendree in the afternoon final.
 
Last season, UIndy earned the No. 3 seed after the stroke play portion and went on to defeat Lewis and Bellarmine to win its GLVC-record 14th men's golf title.
 
Meanwhile, Guisewite (72-69-72) bested the 70-man field with a three-round score of -3 to be crowned the GLVC individual champ.  He is the first Greyhound to medal at the GLVCs since Justin Hueber 2009.
 
Senior David Frank (68-72-76) and freshman Andrew VanAelst (74-69-73) shared sixth place, followed by senior Max Bowling (77-69-78) in 18th and freshman Evan Stoker (75-73-77) in 25th.
