INDIANAPOLIS - The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced Monday that the University of Indianapolis captured the 2013-14 GLVC All-Sports Trophy. Now with three straight All-Sport titles and six overall, UIndy is the first three-peat winner of the coveted traveling trophy since Northern Kentucky turned the trick back in 2002.
Â
The GLVC All-Sports Trophy is presented to the institution that demonstrates the best all-around performance in the league's 20 sponsored sports. Points are allocated based on overall finish in the league standings and finish in the respective sport's conference tournament.
Â
The Greyhounds, who captured league titles in football, volleyball and men's and women's golf, totaled 198.0 points in the GLVC's 20 championship sports – 16.5 points more than second-place Lewis University. The margin of victory was the largest for any GLVC All-Sports winner since 2009.
"I'm incredibly proud of our student-athletes and coaches for their success over the past three seasons and excited that the GLVC All-Sports Trophy will remain in our trophy case for another year," Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Sue Willey said. "Our success on the field and in the classroom is no accident because of the dedication our student-athletes have to embrace and excel in the complete NCAA Division II experience."
Â
Besides earning the trophy the last three years, the Greyhounds also won in 1978-79, 1994-95 and 2002-03.
The Greyhounds opened the season by winning its second consecutive GLVC football championship in the fall, followed shortly thereafter by capturing a volleyball conference crown.
Â
UIndy added two more championships in the spring as men's and women's golf both took home the hardware, marking the second straight conference crown for the men and third consecutive for the women.
Â
In the past three seasons combined, UIndy has amassed an impressive 17 GLVC championships.
The Hounds also posted strong 2013-14 finishes in men's soccer, men's swimming & diving, men's tennis, women's indoor track & field and both outdoor track & field sports – all of which took the runner-up spot in their respective conference championships.
"This trophy is truly an award for the entire athletic department because it really is a team effort between coaches and student-athletes with the support and skills of everyone in the administration, in addition to the invaluable service of our athletic training and strength and conditioning personnel," Willey said.
The Greyhounds are also in the hunt for the GLVC Commissioner's Cup, awarded annually to the most successful school in the league's seven core championship sports: men's soccer, women's soccer, volleyball, men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball and softball. The announcement of the 2013-14 Commissioner's Cup winner is scheduled for Tuesday, May 13.
