EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The UIndy baseball season came to a close Friday morning in a
4-3 loss to Lake Erie in the loser's bracket of the NCAA DII Midwest Regional at USI Field.
Three Greyhound errors in the fourth resulted in 3 unearned runs for 5-seed Lake Erie, giving the Storm (32-21) the edge they needed to send the Hounds (30-25) packing.
UIndy wasted little time putting a run on the board in the opening frame, getting a clutch two-out RBI single from
Kenny Mahala that scored
Jake Weinzapfel.
After a scoreless second, the Crimson and Grey doubled the lead with a run in the bottom of the third.
Sean McCracken led off with a single, and Weinzapfel followed with a double to right.
Anthony Asalon grounded out to bring McCracken in, making it 2-0, but the Storm avoided further damage by retiring the next two batters.
Greyhound starter
Evan Eyer (4-4) fell into bad fortune in the top of the fourth inning as the Storm scored three unearned runs on two hits and three UIndy errors.
The leadoff batter reached on an error, and the next got a single on a sharp grounder back to the mound. With two on and no outs, Zack DeCamp hit a ground ball to second that glanced off Asalon's glove into right field, and McCracken's subsequent throw got past
Caleb Hallman at the dish, allowing two to score. Lake Erie took the lead when Dylan Yankle hit a RBI single through the left side. Â
The Storm added another in the fifth when Eyer issued a bases-loaded walk, increasing their lead to 4-2.
McCracken led off the next half inning with a no-doubter over the left field fence – his sixth homer of the year – clearing the porch seating beyond the wall to cut into the lead, 4-3.
It would be the final run of the game for the Hounds, however, as they managed just three hits over the last four innings.
Trailing 4-3, Hallman leadoff the ninth with a single and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs on the board, Asalon hit a shallow fly into right field that appeared to find a hole between the Storm's first baseman, second baseman and right fielder. Dillon VanDyne, who entered the game at second as a defensive change in the ninth, laid out to make a diving catch, ending the game and UIndy's season. Â
Lake Erie starter Brad Raley (6-3) tossed seven innings, scattering seven hits and three runs, and the staff combined to strikeout four UIndy batters.
Eyer went 5.1 innings in his final game as a Greyhound, giving up five hits and four runs (three earned) while fanning four.
McCracken was 2 for 3 with two runs scored, and Asalon went 2 for 5 with one RBI.
